My dad was a Captain in the Pacific in WW II and he hated Mountbatten…..said he was a joke. He really screwed up Prince Charles with bad advice too.

Hmm, why was he always being rejected by women if he was so good looking and so nice …wise women can sense when a guy is a bit off ….and his wife strayed …he’s dodgy. His cavalier approach during the WW2 that cost hundreds if not thousands of lives, is appalling. And what he did in India!!!! Why is this man revered? Like many men who obtain power, he had low morals, little integrity but loved power and prestige.
My father was a professor of history and never had a good thing to say about this man.

Mountbatten was responsible so many times for sending in Commando's into a no win situation his ego would never allow him to be wrong, but people died uneccessarly. He should be expunged from our history books as a hero, the heros where the ones sent to the slaughter on his say so. As someone else commented he was the Navy's Frank Spencer, shocking.

I am a Royalist (now ?) It's not often in my long life I have hated royalty, however the way Mountbatten bullied and ignored advice about Dieppe just shows what a complete and utter egotistical pillock he was. As an Englishman, I pray the Canadians will forgive us. I never will.

I had to skim over WWII because Mountbatten should have been courtmartialed over the _HMS Kelly_ debacle, so I’m not sure if his very public boast that the surname of the Royal Family was now “Mountbatten” instead of “Windsor, ” which caused _everyone_ around Queen Elizabeth to bristle with rage. And worse, his enormous, self promoting gaffe caused no end of anger and humiliation to his supposedly beloved nephew, Prince Philip, who was therefore not allowed to give his children his surname, causing him to compare himself to “a bloody amoeba. Also, nothing was said about his supposed “close relationship” with Prince Charles; his only interest there was to coerce Charles to marry his granddaughter, Amanda Knatchbull, so he could be known as “The King Father, ” with his direct descendant eventually ascending to the Crown. I’ve read 2 biographies of the man and can’t stand him.

there are many cover ups in regard to this character his Royal connections protecting him from courts-martial and the law and his consistent incompetence, but there go many Royals. he was no loss to the UK. Like Churchill he wrote his own exaggerated story. the truth was never allowed to intervene with the official narrative.

Everything he did in his life was a disaster for those around him, but he made a way for him to climb the social ladder. India will be paying the price for his arrogance and ineptitude for a long time to come. It's very strange that those high up 'promoted' him out of positions that he was messing up, when in fact he should have been court martialled instead.

My dad was one of the lucky few who survived Dieppe and got back to England to fight another day. I'll never forget his take on Mountbatten's murder. He wasn't happy, just a solemn what goes around comes around.
