Did you know the continent 'Africa' was not always known as Africa?

What was the original name of this beautiful continent? So today we are going to learn the ancient name, and why it was changed to the present one.

Africa is home to 54 countries, full of diverse cultures and over 2,000 languages. The current population of Africa is estimated to be 1.46 billion people based on the latest United Nations estimates.

The term Africa was first initiated by the Europeans and came to use through the Roman Conquests between 264 BC and 146 BC. Led by Publius Cornelius Scipio and the people of Carthage which is presently known as Tunisia. The word Africa was derived both from Greek and Roman origin. The word "Phrike" means cold and horror and the Latin "Africa", means sunny.

So, What was the original name of this beautiful continent? And why it was changed to the present one.

The ancient name of Africa was Alkebulan, meaning the mother of mankind or mother of nations and also the Garden of Eden. It also meant the ‘Land of Dark Skins’ or black continent.

The word Africa became widely known in the late 15th to the 17th century, during the era of colonialism, in which many European nations took over, many of it's kingdoms, and took many people as slaves from the land.

However, The word Alkebulan was not the only name in use for the continent. There were many others used throughout history by the indigenous people living there including Ethiopia, Libya, Corphye, Ortigia, Kingdom in the Sky’ and ‘Land of Cush or Kesh’.

It has been speculated by most schools of thought that changing the name from Alkebulan to Africa was an attempt by Western powers to erase Black history, and detach them from their culture and language.

Tunisia used to be Ifrīqiyyah. That is the true origin of the word Africa. Alkebulan was used in Morocco. So you've only traded the name of one area, for the name of another area. None of these words ever meant to include the entire continent. Because the people of the continent are so diverse, they never needed, or wanted a name that would group them all together. On the continent there are hundreds of different cultures, and each has their own way of naming where they live. Sure the colonizers chose to name an entire continent and its people after a very small part of it. And that is exactly what Alkebulan. There could never be one name that represents everyone, from the KhoeKhoe in the south to the Moors in the north. You can not force all of us together in to one culture, because we are not all the same.

It went by many names over time. Al-kebulan is Arabic and the language came about in 500 AD. Before that it was Ethiopia (Greek translation) and before that Abyssinia. Cush also as the sons of Ham inhabited those areas after the flood

On many ancient maps Africa was originally known as Agyzimba. This is three prong referring to the people, the wilderness and the sphinx. Land of the lions

@Bantuarise that because from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Ethiopia are all Greeks, Romans, Celtics(British, Welsh) and Norse(Scandinavians) all Europeans ... They were the ones fighting Igbos(Hebrews) for ages and that land now called Egypt is originally ISU'ANI and was enslaved by the Europeans after which the IGBOS exiled down ward to the western part of KHENMET(AFRICA) ... The Greek were particularly in charge of naming and change the history of KHENMET ages ago ... Every story you know about the bible was all History of the IGBO(Hebrew) History . Those documents of history lives in the dark achieves of the Greeks and Celtics until this day and yet they(Europeans) still returned again and began the Pan-atlantic Slave Trade just make sure they displaced the IGBOS and later term the name ISU'ANI to ISRAEL and got a location outside the KHENMET just in to complete their Displacement Propaganda ... We know the TRUTH because these vital history records were passed down to us by our forefathers(ancestors)

Yes! It was the, Late Great Dr. Ben who taught us Africa's rightful name is Alkebulan also Nubia, like most things where Europe goes in with guns and violent weaponry they always change the names to suit their conquest, inspite of their conquest in serious studies, truth is always revealed and prevails.

The name Afrika existed before the Greeks and Romans. The Kemetic language was dominant and Greeks / Romans (educated by Kemets) took over many words.
Our ancestors had many names for their beloved continent including Afrika!
