"What if I start from scratch, what if I take this apart and remake it, what happens if I just reevaluate this? By doing that I feel like I've discovered so many amazing things and possibilities in things that people really deem as useless."

For Arc'teryx Ambassador, Nicole McLaughlin - waste is not just a consequence of our unquenchable thirst for new products, it's an opportunity. A chance for us to create something useful out of something useless. A new life. A circular economy - by design.

Producer: Jaime Jacquard-Sowa
Art Director: James Kim

Hope they release the panel discussion and the unedited footage of Nicole's interview; I could watch an extended version of this. Nicole is bringing in a new perspective on design, function, and sustainability. As an environmental engineer, I like seeing the new ways that creative people produce things out of "nothing".

Missed opportunity. I don't really understand the thesis of this work. she opens by saying the onus should not be on individuals to fix climate change, but then proceeds to preach the values of upcycling (which is inherently an individualized approach to dealing with overconsumption). What is Arc'teryx doing as a corporation with actual power to change overconsumption besides preaching more consumption via the aesthetics of upcycling and putting the onus back on the individual to act?

“Not because of some corporate checklist” - the company owned by the world's third-largest sportswear corporation

Yup, that’s totally the way we all go to save the planet, companies give you really expensive clothing most people cannot afford and then you cut them up and make a pair of shorts or your own back pack! Coz that’s how we solve a problem like mass overproduction or general waste in the clothing industry.

Okay Arcteryx, you've convinced me to continue to buy your insanely overpriced products.

The concept is inspiring for up cycling used goods, where can we get used products that we can create new. I have a couple ideas I would like to explore.

Hey feel free to send me one of those jackets - I promise to cut it up and turn it into something silly instead of using it as a jacket

Those jackets cost my entire salary and there they are, getting cut for some millennial stupidity owed by the 3rd largest sportswear corp. Jooke

maybe i'm missing something, but it would appear that you're cutting up $700 jackets to make tote bags? and this is supposed to promote sustainability? hipsters are so weird

Looking at their jacket prices I may go find a dead sheep and wear it’s skin.

It is unfair to put it on individuals, but it sells more stuff. It's nice to see some responsible companies out there but corporate marketing is smarter than the average person. Around here, people buy Tesla's and pat themselves on the back while they park it in the driveway of their 8000 square foot house.

Okay Arc’terex so that’s your notice. What y’all gonna do moving forward?

Destroying perfectly good Gore-tex jackets? and instead of fixing a minor issue, completely cutting it? This produces more waste.
