It keeps amazing me that India with 1.4 BILLION inhabitants has such a low amount of medals. New Zealand, a country with 5 million inhabitants won 20 medals of which 10 gold.

My country the Netherlands has won 34 medals in Paris, 15 of them gold. While we only have 18 million inhabitants and a tiny country. Australia is even more amazing with 53 medals and 18 gold. With 26 million inhabitants, Australia has less inhabitants than Delhi!

I do understand that poverty is one of the reasons, but Kenia won 11 medals with 4 gold. 54 million inhabitants, and actually a lower per capital GDP. So poverty can’t be the only reason. Obviously India is more focused on sports that originated from the British empire. Like Cricket and Rugby. But also hockey, and yet India doesn’t clean up the medal table for that sport.

I found some articles saying the bad sporting performance is down to a different diet. More carbohydrates than protein, but I assume once someone is qualified to enter the Olympics proper sporting diets will be provided. Obviously we should not make this too big of a deal, in the end it is just sports. However I do wonder if this shows a bigger problem with health in India.

Anyone an idea why India wins so few medals?

We have to make representation in other sports as well, we are heavily dependent on just 4-5 sports, we need to develop players who play other sports like aquatics, canoe, cycling, equestrian, gymnastics etc.

Nobody will say this, but it has been a terrible outing this year for India in Olympics...117 strong players contingent with 6 medals, not v good.. we are placed like 60 some position in medals tally, heartbreaking for all of us...

The culture, funding and sports ethics need to change. Cricket is a losers sports and does not add anything to India. Elementary and High schools need to implement sports and competition into its curriculum.
