Video to help prepare students for a discussion of Jacques Derrida's /Of Grammatology/. This semester (Fall 2013), I am teaching ENG 378: Aspects of Postmodernism. In this video, I explore the components parts of deconstruction: [1] the identification of binary oppositions; [2] the location of moments in a text where the de-privileged term seems to announce itself as primary (temporarily switching the hierarchy of the opposition); [3] the displacement of the system that requires the initial hierarchization through a complete re-conceptualization of the minor term; [4] an agnosticism or skepticism directed not only at the system itself but also at one's own reconceptualization.
