March, 1918. C-company arrives to take its turn in the front-line trenches in northern France led by the war-weary Captain Stanhope (Sam Claflin). A German offensive is imminent, and the officers (Paul Bettany, Stephen Graham, Tom Sturridge) and their cook (Toby Jones) distract themselves in their dugout with talk of food and their past lives. Stanhope, meanwhile, soaks his fear in whisky, unable to deal with his dread of the inevitable. A young new officer, Raleigh (Asa Butterfield), has just arrived, fresh out of training and abuzz with the excitement of his first real posting – not least because he is to serve under Stanhope, his former school house monitor and the object of his sister’s affections. Each man is trapped, the days ticking by, the tension rising and the attack drawing ever closer…

A masterpiece of a film, perfectly depicts the story of a war fought by men who had no idea why they were there in the first place.

A superbly acted great budget movie that rises above many big budget war movies. The actors portray the fear, tension, senseless sacrifice and unlikely comradeship that these young men went through in the nightmare that was the First World War. A worthy watch.

Asa Butterfield is the perfect Raleigh, not only does he look really young for his age, exaggerating just how young the character of Raleigh is and what a horrible tragedy his death at the end of the third act is, but he also perfectly captures Raleigh’s naive yet sweet nature. Brilliant film, loved it.

GDI, was hoping to get here before some troll randomly used this film to make a crack at 'the Ess Jay Double Yoos'. Still, in before all the rightwing arseholes fart out of their mouths about how this horrifically traumatised young man who selfmedicates with alcohol to stop himself from having a nervous breakdown is 'an excellent role model for today's coddled generation' because he's in active service. (Not because, you know, in spite of the immense pressure he is under he remains a deeply compassionate human being or anything like that)
