Ever since the Dieselgate debacle of mid-2015, Volkswagen (and its associated companies Audi and Porsche) have been working hard to make themselves a new name. In Volkswagen's case, this has included a newfound push toward electrification, with concept car after concept car rolled out at successive auto shows and major events.

But this week in Geneva, just as Volkswagen was unveiling its latest concept car in the form of the I.D. Vizzion, Volkswagen CEO Matthais Muller told reporters that he believed Diesel engines were going to experience something of a renaissance in the not-too-distant future.

Which makes us wonder: is Volkswagen really serious about electric cars?

Less talk, more do, and less of the diesel do-do VW! Great piece Nicky!

I guess the VW is just engaging the EV industry with its I.D. buzz (graphics, videos) every now and then, to keep us constantly dream about a full-fledged EV from VW. Given the cash flow, technology, and market share, VW should have been the front-runner of EVs if it really cared. But it is not.

People stop being surprised by this flagrant lack of respect for what science, people and the facts states. It was only a matter of time before they showed their hand. Now after seeing this, don't hold your breath, ( unless near a VW diesel) on them being serious about EV's. They are seriously hoping and truly want to stay the same. Like the dinosaurs who didn't adapt, when they are gone we not miss them.

Did he say once diesel cars are proven to be clean and environmentally friendly? And this is after they lied about how fuel efficient the diesel car Wiz and how clean it is he's going back to say that it's going to be clean and we're supposed to believe the lie again.

As much as I like the look of the e-Golf, I'm going to boycott them over the diesel scandal (along with any other companies that have done the same). I'm in the market for EV right now too.

I say let VW sit on there hands when it comes to EVs, in 10 years they will be pay dearly for that very decision.

I was driving my cousin's Golf 1.4 TSI yesterday. Much better made than my Zoe and in most ways great to drive but it doesn't pull away from junctions anywhere near as well as an EV and then there are all those whining noises coming out from under the bonnet (not to mention the much higher cost of fuel per mile). I think the main reason VW want people to go back to diesel is the money made from servicing them.

I get my Nissn Leaf 2.ZERO tomorrow morning. Zappi charger by myenergi to be fitted Saturday 17th so that my solar can be most efficiently used. Tesla Powerrwall 2 as soon should have been fitted this month but now having to wait until April 27th, if I'm lucky. Every 5th car made at Sunderland is a Leaf. That's 5 an hour 24 hours a day for their 5 working days a week.

Electric or not, I will never reward VW with a purchase.
What did is inexcusable. Apparently they don't care about the environment.

EVs are hard to make money with. There’s nowhere to hide or cheat. EPA mileage is what you are required to advertise. I am enjoying the continual concept EVs from all the VW group, but they sure are reticent to put these into production (2021 is never never land). Given that, I love their interiors and driving.

But VW is like a gorgeous girlfriend that has no morals. No gain, only pain.

Well if Volkswagen goes back to diesel, they will be screwed in the UK.
The parking charges have doubled if you have a diesel, no matter what the year.
Also the London congestion charge.

I think his comments were mostly for the German market, as petrols and EVs cannot compete with diesels on the autobahn. EVs simply consume too much energy above 80 mph (130 kph) -and petrols as well. Even Teslas have a tendency to overheat when driven on the autobahn resulting in reduced performance. We also know from third parties that diesels fitted with DEF systems are effective at reducing NOx emissions. In fact, from my own experience of driving in Germany (I have driven petrol, EVs and diesels), diesels are still the most economical way to drive long distances on the autobahn in Germany. However, I suspect that this will change as EV efficiency increases, but for now, diesels offer superior performance on the Autobahn. As for the rest of the world, EVs are starting to become suitable replacements for ICE vehicles.

I own the latest model E-Golf with rated 125miles range. The car feels very premium and I usually get more than 125miles of range. It’s an awesome car. Looking forward to their ID cars

In many parts of the world diesel cars are the only option for companies. My buddy got to choose his car for leasing, but he had to buy a diesel.
Thats a huge market and where is a market there is always an interest for vw to deliver.

I think VW is committed to electric vehicle's, but not as the only thing.

I'm a fan of this show and enthusiastic about EVs. I'm all for EVs, but we can't expect the whole world change their minds in the same speed as enthusiastic's do.

Yes they are but, they've already spent a truckload of cash on diesel engines and want to recoup their losses before 2050.

And yet, e-Golf 2017 sales in Europe are only by 5000 behind Leaf.
Renault Zoe - 31410
Bmw i3 - 20855
Nissan Leaf - 17454
Tesla Model S - 15553
VW e-Golf - 12 895
And I haven't seen data for all the rest

Personally, I don't care either way what the CEO or the company says. The important thing is the investments they are putting to going to electric. Are there plants being built? What are the investments in R&D for electric? Are there funding for other companies for their electric technologies? Are there buy outs, or stock investments in any tech that would help in making electric possible? Are there companies being bought or negotiated that is directly or indirectly going to help them in the electric car market? Are they partnering or doing agreements with other companies for the same reasons?

To me, these are the tangible evidence that they are serious or moving towards electric. Anything else is just talk.

In the beginning of the year you ask if you should keep been a singular impartial company or you should go and seek partnership. And the answer is here, free and impartial is the key. The videos of this week were the prof of it. Thanks, great work.
