Some people in this fandom forget the fact that DBZA is a PARODY. Meaning every character's main trait is dialed up to 11 for comedic effect. Goku's idiocy, Gohan being a bookworm, Vegeta wearing his insecurities on his sleaves, etc. They have a disclaimer at the beginning of every episode. Oh wait, I forgot. Dragon Ball fans can't read.

Goku is 23-24 at the start of Z, he was a teen when he and Chi-Chi had Gohan. Then fucking dies at 24 at the latest fighting his alien brother while also finding out he is a alien. The reincarnation of Demon King kidnapped his son, nearly kills the kid if it wasn't for him being half alien. Then goes through LITERAL HELL and back, comes back to life to fight two more aliens. Nearly all of his friends and allies fucking die fighting them. He nearly dies and ends in a coma. While two of his surviving friends take his 6 year old at the latest son to another planet to bring their friends back. Of course he then come back to fight even stronger aliens and a planet destroying dictator TWICE. Then finally gets to chill but at this point Gohan was already fucked, this kid has seen so many people die and beat nearly to death a handful a times, all because of Raditz coming to Earth and Krillin and Bulma take him to space. BUT STILL SOMEHOW IT'S GOKU'S FAULT EVEN THOUGH HE WAS EITHER DEAD OR IN A COMA.

I love DBZA, but I do think it had a negative effect on the fandom. Which by no means was TeamFourStar's intent. They just wanted to make a funny show about something they love.

By all means, enjoy DBZA, it's a fun and funny parody of dragon ball Z, but some people legit take it as canon because "hur durr funni" and while it does improve upon things, there are impressions like "goku is a bad father" that will forever leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Goku’s only real bad moments was refusing the wish to earth and giving Cell a senzu bean. Most of his absences was because he was dead, injured or busy.

i used to think goku was a bad father but now i just realize that the show just doesnt show it. the 3 year training arc for the androids was basically time skipped. thats why i appreciate that they finally realized how that warps the perception of goku for the audience and showed not just the training parts in the time chamber but also the father son moments. the filler arc that showed the 10 days before the cell games also helped for the anime watchers. but thats many episodes in, that people started to notice how little time they spend together. gokus not a bad father but you could get the impression he is

I'm not the biggest DBZ fan. And Goku wasn't the best father (hell, half the time he was dead during Gohan's life), but it's not like he does it intentionally. He seriously thought about others and how to keep them safe if they can't fight back. Which just makes his characterization in Super all the more baffling. Yeah, he was stupid in OG Dragonball. But that was a result of him spending his life completely in isolation with Grandpa Gohan until Bulma showed up. Super was supposed to take place after Z, yet he sank to levels even kid Goku didn't go to. Sorry for the rant. But god Super sucked and sure as hell didn't straighten the perception DBZA fans had that Goku was a bad father.
