I had a burgundy TR7 for 18 months. So CUTE a car. FUN to drive. Was in the shop almost every month for something. Mostly electrical (LUCAS)... ugh! Several starter relays. Dissimilar metal contacts! Stupid engineering. Only one mechanical problem. shifter stick popped out of socket. Mechanic got drunk and wrapped the car around a tree. He had to buy the car from me. I was as happy that day as I had been the day I bought the car!!! I always wondered two things when I got into the car: 1. Will it crank? and 2. Will it get me back home? I never had that experience with any other car. I miss the fun of driving it, just the same.

I come from a rusty place, I feel your pain. What you see is tip of the iceberg, sandblast it and all you’ll have is brown dust and bondo. If it runs you can keep it going for a while with a wire feed welder and scrap steel but that one is well past its ‘best if used by’ date for both aesthetic pleasure and safety.

I rebuilt mine 13-14 years ago when they were generally classed as worthless by many and parts were generally cheap and available.
Don't envy any poor sod who is rebuilding one now especially with the cost and limited parts availability.
Good luck.

Back working at a BM dealership in the 70s, we had to try to find used heads that were not porous. There were always the leaking sunroofs here. Maybe there were other problems in other parts of the country.

If you plan to have it dipped, and/or blasted keep your expectations low. ;-)

Give it life! My favorite car of all time. I had a dolomite sprint, and its still on the road, like new these days, last l heard in Ireland. You can do it.

Great car the TR7, fantastic on long drives but for certain issues. I owned one for 9 years, fond memories too. I became used to knocking on people's doors, "Can I use your phone

Well Chris what can i say? you have enough work there to last the rest of your life, or you know those really big roll on roll off skips, i reckon you could get all 3 in. I really wouldn't know were to start, your a brave man indeed.

Looks like the kind of project I take on without realising how much work there is going to be. :)

i love and hate these cars with equal passion, ran one for two years back in the eighties. the design I think was gorgeous, but the build quality and reliability was awful. would love one that was profesionaly restored, with all the problems sorted, but now am too old to do it myself

You’re a sucker for punishment Chris!! Not an easy project that one, a brave man for sure. Prices for decent ones seem to be steadily on the up so by the time you get it done it will be happy days.

What can i expect for maintence on these cars? Does it need constant repairs and replacement parts? Im thinking of buying one but I dont want to have to have it in the shop after each use. Id just be using it to go a couple miles (10 max) a couple times a week maybe longer on occassion.
