One of my favorite throws of all time..!! It's a very safe throw with high finish percentage..!! You can also vary it slightly with a strong elbow to arm pit underhook from a more upright position (no drop to knees) while hipping in and catching a leg sweep..!! It pays to have a nice collection of throws..!! Highly recommend wrestlers take some Judo to tighten the throw game..!! It was a complete game changer for me..!! Cary's executions are as good as it gets..!!

Always a joy to watch your clean demonstrations! Any tips on how I should hop before the throw?

Slick!
It is similar to drop seoi nage.
I prefer to put my right foot outside my opponent's right to try to prevent them from stepping with/around.
Also, from the collar tie, pulling their head away from the direction of the throw as most people will automatically try to resist/correct their position thereby shifting their weight in the direction you want them to go, compromising their position and balance . In Judo that is called kuzushi.

I used to spar with a guy out of Virginia who won many tournaments with that throw. He would usually set it up with a fake foot sweep to make his opponent step back with one foot, opening the door for him to come through and compromising their balance.

There is a variation of this that I like where, instead of an arm drag, you come around the neck with your right arm in this case and take them down directly into the cowboy hold, or kesa gatame in Judo.

Great stuff as always, Coach.

Did you ever do any judo? You’re effectively describing a seoi nage throw. A lot of the mechanics are similar, except the sleeve control being replaced with wrist control, but the idea is the same.
