Song Name: Paar Chanaa De
Music Directed by Noori
Produced by Strings

With its soulful indie-rock feel ‘Paar Chanaa De’ is a grand duet of music directors, Noori featuring Shilpa Rao. An oral tradition passed on to the brother duo by their grandparents, it’s a song that they’ve considered as a family treasure since long. In the beginning few chords, the track establishes the earthy soul vibes that transcend in waves laden with a distinct melody and instrumentation. Noori and Shilpa Rao’s vocals, independently encapsulate the listener earnestly, as the soundscape further develops with Noor Zehra’s impeccable groove on the ‘Sagar Veena’. In an exhilarating performance, the track commands your attention ever so gently. #CokeStudio9

It's about conversation between Sohni and her clay pot, which is about to sink along her. She used to travel across river Chenab each night to meet mahiwal, but one day that clay pot replaced with the one having unbaked clay by her sister-in-law, so in middle of river she realized it's not her pot and she won't be able to cross the river to meet mahiwal. It's about that.. She's having conversation with clay pot, 'aj mahiwaal nu mei jana mil way...warna..yaar nu milay gi aj lash yaar di'

This song is about an old tragic folklore. During the Mughal Empire reign in the Indian subcontinent, there was a beautiful girl named Soni. She lived on one side of the Chenab River in Gujarat. This area was home to a very famous trading port. So merchants and traders throughout the world would visit. Soni and her family had a small shop where they sold decorated pots. One day, as Soni was in the shop, an Uzbek merchant named Mahiwal came inside and instantly fell in love with her. Then every day after that he would come to the shop just to see her. Soon, she too fell madly in love with him. However, Soni's family and village members wouldn't allow her to marry him because people from her village couldn't marry outsiders. Heartbroken, he moved to the other side of the Chenab River. At night when everyone was asleep, Soni would sneak across the river using a large baked pot to float across. One night, her sister-in-law (her brothers wife) sees her and hatches a plan to replace the baked pot with an unbaked pot, so it would melt in the water while Soni would try to cross the river. This song is a conversation between Soni and the unbaked pot. She is begging the pot to take her across because she has to see her lover. But because the pot is unbaked it inevitably starts to melt, and the pot says to Soni, "Kacchi meri miti kaccha mere naam ni". When Soni realizes that there is no escape she says "yaar noon milegi ajj lash yaar di" (tonight my lover will be greeted with my dead body). Finally, the pot melts completely and Soni drowns. Her lover on the other side sees this and jumps in the river and drowns too so that they can finally be together in the afterlife. :(

today is 21-08-2024. I normally dont comment. I casually enjoy music but this song deserves an appraisal. Please mark my words "A people that can produce, comprehend and enjoy such complex, metaphorical art need not fear anyone". You can achieve anything you want. Living Heritage. This is deserving proud moment.

The texture of Shilpas' vocals is so different and unique. It doesn't overwhelm the choir yet it is very contrasting in nature. It stands out without overwhelming other voices.

Hamza's Depiction - Sohni talking to Garha and Garha answering Sohni.

Shilpa Rao's Depiction - Sohni talking to herself to never lose hope even if it means to be her corpse to cross the river and be on the other side with Mahiwal.

Ali Noor's Depiction - Sohni's inner self talking to her and asking her to pray as hard as she can.

Wow! Masterpiece.

Really amazed to hear the same Punjabi as my Dada ji used to speak Pakistan has preserved the true Punjabi and we Indians have diluted it and we should accept it . Childhood memories ki yaad aagai.
