One thing I don't understand is, how does arduino understand the maximum value of potentiometer, when potentiometers have different resistances. Does it internally measure the total resistance of the potentiometer and divide it to 1023 segments?

Why can't I just write map(analogread(pot), ....) why do I have to create variable?
