Evgenia MEDVEDEVA: TRIPLE LUTZ (3Lz) Progress

Evgenia Armanovna Medvedeva (Евгения Армановна Медведева, born 19 November 1999), is a Russian figure skater. She is a two-time Olympic silver medalist (2018 ladies' singles, 2018 team event), a two-time world champion (2016, 2017), a two-time European champion (2016, 2017), a two-time Grand Prix Final champion (2015, 2016), a two-time Russian national champion (2016, 2017), silver medalist at the 2018 European Figure Skating Championships and bronze medalist at the 2019 World Championships. Earlier in her career, she won the 2015 World Junior Championships, the 2014 Junior Grand Prix Final, and the 2015 Russian Junior Championships.

The GOEs got higher as the inside edge got deeper!

It’s nearly impossible for Evgenia to get a deep or even a slight outside edge on her lutz. She pre-rotated and muscles the jump way too much. You can see her body position pre-take-off when the pick hits the ice that she’s leaning so far right of her body to be able to muscle the jump, therefore throwing her out of the outside edge. It’s impossible to sustain an outside edge when your tilting so far right.

If a skater has developed a bad technique of the lutz jump from a young age, it seems they will never be able to fix it. Mao Asada, Evgenia, Sasha Cohen have all tried to fix their flutz, but have never been able to pull off a true, deep outside edge lutz in their careers

I'm having a hard time thinking of one lady who debuted as a senior with a flutz and was able to fix it. I think Kostornaia was coming close at the end of last season, but under Plushenko her technique has regressed.

This is just as outrageous as it would be grading a tuck salto as a layout in artistic gymnastics. First, you have to be blind not to see the difference, as they are completely different things. Second, the difference in difficulty and value is significant. Third, a gymnast that is simply not able to perform a layout salto (or any other fundamental skill) would never be considered world-class. And yet this is what we are seeing here in ice skating.

Like others have pointed out, it's not about the fact that she doesn't have lutz (she really doesn't) but she was literally never called for it for like 3 entire senior seasons and ended up in first place for highest average GOE for her lutz which isn't even a lutz to begin with. This is totally unacceptable to the point of being absurd and ludicrous. It's also extremely unfair to other skaters who either have a true lutz like Tuktamysheva (who always gets low GOE for it) or who have a flutz but are called for it each time or most of the time. No one ever said that you can't make mistakes. But rewarding skaters for making mistakes is not acceptable.
I know Evgenia's fans will argue that her flutz is her only minor fault when in fact that is so untrue as she has many other flaws (that were also consistently overlooked and instead rewarded with high GOE) and what her fans also don't seem to understand is that if her flutz had been called every time she would not even have made the podium for most of the competitions she ended up winning. That's because she technically jumped three flips in each of her free programs which is not allowed and one of them should have gotten zero points every single time. Making obvious mistakes also should have affected her presentation scores which were already highly inflated to begin with.
