NZ Defence Force detonates suspicious item found on beach

Bomb Squad officers from New Zealand's Defence Force have detonated a suspicious item on a beach in Orewa, north of Auckland.

A passerby discovered the device early this afternoon, and the area has been shut off to the public until further notice.

I was out kitesurfing when this happened. The local residents told me it was a pretty decent explosion, and my car was covered in sand and phosphorous when I came in from my kite session. I missed seeing it because the clubbies told us we had to move down the beach, and I didnt really pay attention because I was a few k's down the beach when it got set off. But apparently bloody decent blast. And today there's a fricking cyclone blowing. Whats next?
