Chris, as a young college student I used to work as an investigator for lawyers many decades ago. I took statements, drew diagrams, etc. for plaintiffs that were represented by the lawyers I worked for. One advice from the lawyers regarding an accident, whether you were at fault or not, was to never speak with the other driver or with their insurance company because you may say something that you don't know could harm your case such as shared negligence. I would be real cautious about talking about this too much on YouTube also.

Just my 2 cents. Lane placement to make yourself visible, Never put yourself in a no way out situation, Never just rely on a horn. I learned this lesson 30 years ago when I almost got ran over in a bank drive through. Since me and my wife do a lot of travel on 2 wheels we have a motorcycle towing service similar to AAA with 100 miles of towing included and it has come in handy. In my opinion this is a must for those who do a lot of riding. Sometimes these are hard lessons to learn but glad your ok, motorcycles can be repaired.

Retired motorcycle officer here....glad you weren't more seriously injured! No matter how carefully you ride and plan, sometimes (especially if you ride a lot) you just find yourself in a position behind a truck, bad lane choice, etc, that you don't want to be in. Most of the time we get away with it. That day, you did or didn't depending on your perspective. Sucks to be in a crash, but not many have a truck back over them and escape with bruises. Get back riding as soon as you feel able, so you don't build a wall in your mind and ride timid. Thanks for detailing your experience on this, I'm sure it's going to help people

I ride a 2020 Goldwing Tour DCT.

I've never dropped a bike or been involved in an accident even after 400k miles - knock on wood. This doesn't mean that I am a great rider; it simply means that I am aware of mine and others limitations and stupidity. A big part of my education is stories like yours. I always stay back at least 2 car lengths, turn my wheels out and stay in their rearview mirrors. The "leave yourself an exit" rule has never been truer. That said, I find myself getting complacent at times - then snap out if it when that unease sets in. Your experience has been engraved in my memory bank along with the others.

I am glad you are okay. Thanks for sharing your story so that others may keep it in their minds during their journeys too.

You don’t get in the driver’s mirror by moving to the side, you get in the driver’s mirror by being further back. I ride a Gold Wing and drive a tractor/trailer occasionally. He should have never backed up, and you should have been back far enough so that you were in his mirror. The further back you are the closer to the center of the lane you can be and still be seen.
Again, I’m glad you’re okay.

So sorry to see this, hope you're OK.
Lots of trucks in the UK have a sign on the back that says "If you can't see my mirrors, I can't see you" in large writing. Having seen your tale of woe I shall be even more careful in future as I'm soon to take delivery of a 2nd hand Honda Deauville after being without a bike for the last year or so. Stay safe.

5/31/22 My 2018 Honda Goldwing DCT was totaled after being hit by a hit and run driver who ran a red light. 10 Broken Ribs. Still no new bike and ribs are still broken. Hope you feel better.

I'm a retired police officer and have seen to many times how wrecker services take advantage of motorist, especially motorcyclists. There is no reason for an 800.00 plus charge to transport a motorcycle 45 miles!!! That's over 18.00 a mile. Just absolutely ridiculous!
I hope you get better soon .

Chris, your story is so valuable to all riders. We can never be too cautious as drivers just pay no attention to what they are doing. Although you will replay and second guess your actions for a long time, you were in a bad place that sounds like was unavoidable. Heal quickly, love your comments and positive attitude. Chuck

First off, let me say I am so glad you are just bruised and battered after your crash, and not injured more severely. I had a similar experience recently, on March 8th to be exact, when I was rear ended by a 17-year-old driver who was busy joking with his friends in the car and looking at bikini clad girls along the beach. I too was bruised and battered, and being 63 years old, I'm still trying to heal up from some of the more intense bruising. Luckily, I was wearing my helmet, jacket, and gloves and the "road rash" was minimal.

My 2017 Wing was totaled as a result of the crash and I have a cross country trip planned for May. After the insurance wrote me a check for my bike, I purchased a 2023 Goldwing Tour (manual transmission).

I have become a fan of yours and have learned so much from watching your videos. I purchased the maintenance videos for the 2018+ and have watched the majority of them as I have been installing lots of auxiliary lighting on the new bike. The one video I have searched for and haven't been able to find is how to adjust the clutch travel, not the lever itself, but changing where the friction zone engages. On my new bike, the clutch lever has to been almost completely released before the friction zone is encountered. Is there a way to adjust this so it engages closer to the grip? Would love to see a video on how to adjust this.

Again, glad you are essentially ok after your crash. As a retired law enforcement officer, I have responded to an undetermined number of crashes...too many to count. But I've said it many times in the past. "Any crash that you can walk away from and talk about is like a plane crash you can walk away from. It's a good one!"

Good luck with your insurance issues. Progressive was "johnny on the spot" for me and I couldn't ask for better service.

Take Care! Never ride faster than your guardian angel can fly!

Great update Cruiseman. I agree with all the commenters urging a checkout of your leg and hip. You don't know what could be lurking there. Maybe it's just a deep bone bruise, but it could be a fracture. All of your expenses play into the final settlement, and you don't want to have to deal with anything after it's all said and done. The biggest PITA after an accident is you no longer have control over your life. Now, there's so many other things going on, total disruption in your days and plans. What a total PITA. Look, it's already playing out. You had to buy an airline ticket just to get home. You don't know when/if you'll have to come back. Thank the good Lord I've never been in a motorcycle crash. I have been in a car crash that was pretty devastating to me & the vehicle a lifetime ago. I still remember what a pain it was getting through all the crap. Mine too was in a place not near where I lived (100+ miles away). Trips back and forth to the body shop, doctors, etc. What a disruption. Anyway, you're on the mend, you have plans that are unfolding and you're dealing with the situation as best as you know how and it'll all work out. Lots of new future content! Take care.

A small bruise the size of a large bruise. Recommend an X-ray of right hip/femur.

Thanks for the update and certainly glad you are overall ok. But reguardless of what you feel by looking at the video, you could have and should stopped with one of his mirrors in your view. Anytime behind a semi always keep one of it's mirrors in your sights. And yes that means moving side to side with the curves to keep one in your view. Sorry to sound preachy but just need any newer riders that see this vid (and the previous vid) that it is a very important part of motorcycle/semi riding safety. Again very glad you are ok.

Glad you're ok. AAA would've really helped you with the tow bill. The first 100 miles free.

thanks for the update Chris. I would suggest you go see your Dr when you get home, and yes, turn in any out of pocket charge for that as well. if it becomes something worse that shows up later, you will have proof of examination as a direct cause of accident recorded.

Cruiseman’s Garage, I’ve been watching you for years now. I’ve been in an accident and I’m sorry that has happened. In my opinion there’s more to a motorcycle accident than just the physical damage to the bike. My thought are with you. Regarding the temporary loss of your bike, I’m sure I’m not the only who watches your videos that don’t actually include you riding. A few come to mind right off the bat. I’ve watched maintenance videos, helmet videos, Bluetooth comms, the BMW test and multi-state ride, and the meetups with others in the DFW area. Your channel has a lot to offer, so I don’t want you to worry about whether we’ll be here to watch when you don’t have a bike. Please keep sharing your opinions and experiences. After healing up maybe you could even try some bikes on Riders-Share or Twisted Roads. There are also a lot of gear shops/stores in the DFW area. Want to tell us great places to go? Please consider how you’d like to spend the time. We’ll be here.
