I thought I knew how to do this choke after seeing it used in the UFC a few times. I could get to the position during sparring in no-gi class, but couldn't figure out how to properly apply pressure in order to get the tap. Then, I found this video. During sparring last night, I tapped a fellow white belt twice with the Von Flue choke. He's a strong, athletic guy who's probably younger than me... but this channel has become my secret weapon. Thank you, Coach!!!

Congratulations, You're an excellent Sensei, don't let the criticism make you angry, what matter is that you're teaching a very good technique

Oss!

Doc: Ah, yes, the Von Flu is going around these days.
Me: So, what I gotta take?

This is one of my favorite counters. I have an unusually strong neck and so I often bait my opponent into hitting a guillotine and let them waste energy on a weak hold while I slowly gain position and then hit this choke on them. Nothing more satisfying than feeling them go limp from holding on too long

You can hit this from inside your opponents guard. I was surprised when I learned this. The professor who taught me this was a jujitsu world champion at one point in time.

You're right about the skinny arms, but there's another thing. It's also an advantage to have wide shoulders.
If you have small shoulders, you have one stability point for the choke... your elbow against the ground.
If you have wider shoulders such that the distance from the outside of your right shoulder to the other side of your neck (where you pinch their forearm) is greater than the distance from their pinched arm to their throat... this turns their forearm into a second stability point which will help you generate a more powerful pinch with your shoulder.
If you make a straight line from your floor elbow to your right shoulder to your left shoulder, you will find one of 2 things. Either, your shoulders aren't wide enough and you have no problem fitting your shoulders straight in that space... or you will find that your shoulders don't fit in this space, which means that when you bend the choking shoulder towards their throat, you will be generating force from both your bicep AND the twisting force being generated against their trapped arm.

This is great! Can you do one on that cartwheel pass and how to do it properly so your neck is not in danger?

Isn't there 2 methods of force to the Von flu choke brother?

I dislocated a guys jaw doing this. It is Brutal! Many guys refuse to tap and don't realize the damage this stuff can do. For the rest of his life he now has a clicking uneven jaw.

Coach -- Do you think the von flue is viable against someone 50+ lbs larger than yourself (let's say you can only reach enough to lock with an S-grip)? I feel very unstable when doing it and have gotten rolled over because of how my weight is being distributed while applying it, but I'm wondering if I just need to adjust my technique.

Hey mate how to you prevent them reguarding? Or recovering one hook for a half guard?
