Giving Medication in Horses’ Feeds

Giving medication in feeds is a common occurrence when your horse requires medicine.

It is vital to follow the following steps to ensure you do it correctly:

- Make sure the medication is in date

- Follow the dosage instructions on the label. There might also be warnings such as to wearing gloves when handling the product, or feeding on as empty stomach as is possible.

- Add medication to the feed immediately prior to feeding it.
Some drugs become deactivated if they are exposed to air or moisture for a long period of time.

- Make sure the feed is made up in a sheltered area to ensure the powder doesn’t blow across the yard.
This is to prevent inadvertent contamination, which is vital for horses competed in affiliated competition.

- Stir the feed throughly so the medication is mixed in.
If using a utensil for this, ensure it is washed thoroughly with soap and water.

- If your horse doesn’t like the medication, you may need to add extras to help disguise the taste, such as sugar beet, molasses or even apple juice.
Always let your vet know though - there’s so many formulations available that might taste better.
