Cortisone shot in knee can be very tempting to get. There are two sides to the decision making to get a cortisone shot in the knee that you need to know. They can be beneficial to help with initial pain relief so those in significant arthritis pain may benefit from these shots, especially if you are having a hard time finding any pain relief. If you aren't in severe pain, a cortisone shot may not be appropriate for you. The next question you should be asking is what's next? Cortisone shots in knees typically only last a few months so it's important to have a plan when you get one. Learn the advantages and disadvantages of cortisone from Dr. Alyssa Kuhn, physical therapist and arthritis specialist with Keep the Adventure Alive what that plan should entail.

I have arthritis in both knees and have been getting a cortisone shot in each knee every 3 to 9 months and it is a miracle how much it helps my painful stiff knees it takes about 24 hours to start working and only gets better with time just take it easy for a couple of days after.

First cortisone shot helped about six weeks, second one just shy of three months and this one resulted in zero pain relief, increasing pain and damage, a meniscus tear a month later. I’m in excruciating pain. I’m so scared of surgery and am searching for all the natural solutions and committed to trying physical therapy and rehab first

Thank you! I'm age 70, asthma, diabetic, osteroporosis, Palindromic rheumatism, two torn rotator cuffs, bad bunions, celiac, & acid reflux. I fall easily and literally can't get up. I was just told I have no gel in my knees. Dr wanted me to try physical therapy first for 2 weeks, and then maybe a cortisone shot. But I don't want any more medicines, seriously. I'd rather find an exercise program that works around all of the above issues. I think I'll ask my hospital about their sports treatment dept. Most of the gyms do not have qualified people -- I don't need to hurt worse! You've really encouraged me! I was feeling a little hopeless until I saw this video!

Thank you so much! I just got my first one yesterday! I’m on anti-inflammatory diet now and just got an elliptical. I fit your mold for who should get one. Since yesterday I notice less pain. I slept better than I have in years. But I’m not ready to do steps again or walk without pain yet. But some daily improvement so far. Worth it to me just to get a good nights rest ❤ I am a subscriber now. Btw I’m also healing myself from RA with my diet as well.

Thank you, I am 64 and just had my first diagnosis of osteoarthritis and it was crippling. I had my first shot of cortisone/steroid it took 3 to 4 weeks before I got relief. I am pretty active and still work. I don't really want to have a knee replacement. I have started taking meloxicam 15mg and an arthritis cream twice a day along with wearing a knee sleeve and drinking a lot of water. This seems to have really improved but not completely got rid of the knee pain. I feels best when I am up and moving around and really gets stiff when sitting around or sleeping. What's else should I try to keep this issue from getting worse?

Great video. My initial knee pain was due to over use. Then multiple injuries. Went to the urgent care Dr and was told bone on bone. He did nothing. Months later my pain level was a 9. My knee was buckling, couldn’t sleep, severe swelling. I had to get the shot and I discussed options. Received a knee brace, getting active again, and will reevaluate in 3 months. If no improvement, get a gel block which lasts for 6 months with the hope of no further treatment.

At 67 y.o. i was recently diagnosed with osteoarthritis. I have bone on bone in my R knee. However, pain (thankfully) is not my primary complaint, but rather the overall dysfunction of my knee which includes buckling & sharp pain upon certain movements. (I am able to walk 2 miles a day with little to no pain.) Primarily, i'm afraid of falling or having my knee go out totally and unexpectedly. I briefly considered cortisone until my pediatrician daughter suggested it is merely a bandaid and urged me to go through with the replacement. Thank you for your video.

The shot affected my vision. Hoping after 6 months my correct vision will return. Also going to physical therapy to strengthen hip and leg muscles that help take pressure off the knees. Muscle strength is very important. Wish i had seen this video before getting the shot. Orthopedist didn't explain negative aspects of the shot. He said nothing would help...how ignorant. PT has helped my level of pain!

62 yo. Bone on bone in both knees. Was a long distance runner for 25 years. I had lost the ability to even walk without pain. My. Ortho Dr was ready for cortisone injections. I tried a quality CBD lotion which was transformational for me. I am now walking 4 miles daily for over a year with very little pain. I apply the CBD lotion daily in the morning, it has managed the inflammation for me.

I had cortisone injections on both my HIPs. It helped a little but I discovered that most of my pain was occurring in the morning. I would wake up to pain, stiffness despite the cortisone shot. I saw video from this PT about having some pillows under your legs if you sleep on your back. I tried it and the morning stiffness and pain went away. I do get inflammation easily doing ordinary things. Like today I went to do laundry. I carried a 20 pound laundry bag to and from the car and by the time I got home, both my hips were inflammed. If I go food shopping I get inflammed walking up and down the supermarket with a shopping cart. I get pain relief with rest and some stretches, ice packs.

Thank you so much for this informative video. My husband has worn out hip and I have concerns about him getting cortisone shot. I will prepare anti inflammatory meals for him and hopefully he will lose weight and start feeling better.

I saw a doctor in Physical Medicine the other day. And I asked about this. He said if I was his wife, mother or sister he would not recommend it. It could affect the bones.

What is your thoughts on Hyaluronic Acid Injections?

I’m in a fair amount of pain an I’m considering a cortisone shot as my next step. That being said I had not idea there were inflammatory foods that could aggravate the condition. I also didn’t know one needs a plan of action after receiving the shot. Thank you for this more than valuable information.

Cortisone shot injection have never helped enough to even get them . I can't get out of pain but to me in my opinion the shots seem to make everything worse. I'm not looking for a band-aid relief I'm wanting to get more help on reliving pain without having surgery
