Announcing: Inquiry into the IMF

On 18 April, the leadership of the IMF will gather in Washington DC to reaffirm its mandate to guarantee financial stability, achieve sustainable growth, and reduce global poverty.

But a review of the IMF’s lending practices reveal a pattern of illegality, impunity, and disregard for human rights that stretches across continents.

In Ukraine, the IMF continues to extract $2.3 billion in annual fees and payments while the government struggles to survive Russian invasion and provide for over 6.5 million displaced people.

In Afghanistan, 97 percent of the local population is set to plunge into poverty by mid-2022, but the IMF suspended the country’s access to the Fund’s resources.

And in Argentina, the IMF ignored warnings from its own staff to push a record $56.3 billion loan that violated its bylaws and imperiled the Argentine economy.

The IMF is a public institution that lends public money with a mandate to serve public purpose — but it answers to no one. There is currently no authority anywhere in the world that holds the IMF accountable for its actions.

That is why, on 14 April 2022, the Progressive International is launching an Inquiry into the IMF.

"IMF, dirty MF takes away everything it can get, always making certain that there's one thing left, keep them on the hook with unsupportable debt."
(In case you wondered what MF stood for)
