The creators of the show actually addressed this. They said that the Avatar is meant to work to bring balance in both the physical and spirit worlds and that the darker tone of the spirit world in the original series is due to there being 100 years of no Avatar. Then the lighter tone in the Legend of Korra is meant to reflect all the work that Aang has put into restoring balance.

A lot of people fail to realize that Aang is literally 12 years old and a Monke he was taught peace and tranquility his whole life waking up 100 years worth of build up from his mistakes

Also too because he was in stasis another avatar couldn't be born. Basically the MVP of your team got stuck in a wall glitch and now has to clutch up in a very limited time frame

Aang was grieving for a lot of the show even if we don't see it. His whole culture was just up and gone. Friends, family. Gone in what seemed like a blink to him.

I remember when he thought they had found other Airbenders for a second. How excited, happy, he was. Only to find it was people living in the temple using machines to fly.

The fresh grief must have almost brought him to his kness. And no one will ever understand. Because he made it so.

i would say that his spirit world is like that because in the show they state that the avatar is the gate way between the realms and since he's been gone for over a hundred imagine a country without a leader for 100 years

Not only the avatars emotion it resembles the spiritual situation of the real world and in the Aang era there was a war going on but in Korras time there was a long lasting peace

1. This was definitely a retcon. 2. It wasn’t always dark when aang was in the spirit world, remember when he meets the faceless monkey. 3. But because it is a retcon it does add a depth of new lore to the story

No one ever really talks about the amount of trauma Aang has, it would make sense that the spirit world is as messed up as he feels sense he’s the one influencing it.

Also keep in mind, when Aang went to the spirit world each time, it was to face a troubled or wicked spirit. The only time it wasn't was when Roku was showing Aang his life.

It's because the spirit world in ATLA has spirits that represent aspects of nature and the world's creation. While in Korra it's just a copy of spirited away, not another dimension of the natural world but a different world isolated from reality.
