Returning to the San Diego First United Methodist Church Concert Series on September 30, 2018, SACRA/PROFANA presented a mix of familiar anthems and hidden gems of some of the finest in sacred choral music in one of the most beautiful sanctuaries in all of San Diego.

Juan Carlos Acosta, Conductor
Lara Korneychuk, Assistant Conductor
Adam Ferrara, Accompanist

"Sacred Music for a Sacred Space" was designed specifically with the beautiful Sanctuary of San Diego First United Methodist Church in mind. The modern architecture radiates with natural light and beauty, while also referencing traditions of the past including some of the historic cathedrals of Europe. This program features many composers who have been active since the time this church was built until the present day with compositions about light, water, and re-imaginings of traditional elements of Christian worship. Also a consideration on programing was the welcoming nature of this congregation and what it means to have a sacred space. We will be giving the regional premiere of two pieces on the theme of acceptance; "Womanly Song of God" by Libby Larsen and "Sanctuary" by Ola Gjeilo. Music for this concert will span from the 16th century up to the present day, and range in styles from traditional European choral music, to modern settings by duel nationality composers, as well as contemporary settings of African American Spirituals.” Juan Carlos Acosta, Artistic Director
