Played these preludes when young. Always great to hear a recording I've never heard before

Wonderful interpretation, passionate and crystal-clear. Larrocha is definitely so much more than the spanish repertoire with which she is usually associated.

What a gem! Alicia was here about 50 years old and on the high point of her carreer. I like her basses very much. She also performed the Spanish piano music throughout the world. Nobody performed these works better than she did.

I remember hearing her play this same recital (Preludes + Granados Escenas Romanticas and Falla Fantasy Baetica) at the Kennedy Center; this programme must have been during that same concert tour. It was a beautiful performance, not only the virtuosity, but sheer gorgeous piano playing. Even after all these years, I remember the concert very well.

But she seemed strangely unhappy to be onstage, until someone mentioned to us that she had recently experienced a death of a family member, which of course explained her unsmiling demeanor.

Despite that, she did play 3 or 4 encores as beautifully as the main program.

And regarding the Preludes themselves, I’m still amazed at the level of Chopin’s genius to end that final D minor prelude on those three D notes in the bass…couldn’t have been a better way to end the cycle. Something so unique in the entire history of music…
