COVID-19 has triggered waves of attacks on Asians around the world. The UK reported a three-fold rise in hate crimes on its East and Southeast Asian community in the early months of the pandemic. Now, two years into the global health crisis, correspondent Wei Du returns to Britain to find out if people who look like her are still living in fear, and what it would take to stop Asian hate in Britain. In the process, she also discovers the long history of racist attitudes towards Asians in the UK, and how the community is finally determined to fight back.

“But I’m Christian” isn’t an excuse, and you should NEVER use God as your shield… God doesn’t condone hate or violence.

Wei Du said she only recently saw Asian hate in Britain. But the fact is, Asian racism (and racism, in general) has always been in British society for generations. If Wei Du didn't witness it before, that's because it was lurking beneath the surface, waiting for a trigger. That trigger was COVID-19.

Another possible trigger is China's frightening rise as an economic world power.

I am English and this makes me sick. I would have helped him in a Heart beat. The Chinese Asians are one of best role model citizens in UK. Always been impressed by their work ethic in university and professional workforce.

Despite England being one of the most diverse countries, it’s full of prejudice and bigotry

I am half Chinese. I experienced racism ALL the time when I lived in the UK from the 1970s until 1997, when I moved to work in the Far East. This involved verbal abuse, idiots trying to pick fights and throwing stones and snowballs packed with jagged ice, being chased through streets at night by thugs yelling racist insults etc. Most of the perpetrators were white men, but I’ve also faced racist abuse from black people and South Asians. So have many of my Chinese and Japanese friends. East Asians have suffered violent racist abuse long before the pandemic.

Same here in Australia. For my experience as an Asian student, I’ve been facing racism too since the rise of Covid. I’m from Kyrgyzstan but people think I’m Chinese just because of my mongoloid look. People think Covid comes from Asian people in general. For my experience, I’ve never been attacked but instead I’ve been pushed and yelled at mostly about Covid and China’s problems in their country and sometimes they would bump my shoulder real hard with a strong force sometimes on a train and a street. Of course, I wasn’t a coward. I just didn’t want to have a problem with them and continued ignoring them. For my friends who are Vietnamese, Malaysian and Filipino, a couple weeks ago a group of teenagers threw a battle of water at their heads telling them to go back to their countries and complaining about China’s problems that have nothing to do with them. My friends didn’t want to waste their time fighting back and explaining to them so they left. I can’t believe ignorant people still exist in a first world country.

I did not know about the Chinese sailors who were deported after serving in the wars - that is absolutely heartbreaking.

I find this documentary very depressing and feel that the world is going into the opposite direction. But these issues and stories must be talked about and raised no matter how difficult it may be for everyone.

I've been in the UK throughout the pandemic. Fortunately, I haven't experienced racism here myself though I cannot say the same on behalf of my ESEA friends... one was called f***ing Chinese by a random, racist passer-by, another was turned away rudely at a fast-food counter because apparently she "had Covid" because she "looked Chinese" - my poor friend was so shaken by that experience, especially because she was new to the UK...

Whenever I am outdoors now, there is still fear of encountering racism and being unable to respond to any such macro/microaggressions. I also feel as if I am being made more aware of how different I am for being of Asian descent. That being said, I have met a lot of lovely, diverse people here in the UK - racism exists everywhere, including in my home country... we need to encourage people to speak up about racist encounters, validate their feelings & give them support (but also be careful not to pin every issue on racism) - thanks for this video!

As an Asian who lives in Florida, I must take precautions /extra careful at ALL times. I don’t trust anyone except my family. Sadly, hate is everywhere.

I live in Australia and at work I was given the nickname "Rona" when the virus came out.
Ridiculous behaviour, taking into consideration that I work in the medical field also.

Thanks for the documentary, Wei Du! We had a sense of racism even when we were tourists in Canada back 30 years ago but now, we know it is worse.

When times are bad it is easy to stir hatred against immigrants.

I've experienced it even way prior to covid. We need to learn to love and embrace each other.

I am in NYC and heart broken with the Asian hate on the news. I have had Asian friends my entire life. They are the kindest warmest people I know. Chinese, Vietnamese, Filipino, Thai and Cambodian

This abuse should never happen to any race. We are all human beings experiencing life until it comes to an end. We are all heading in the same direction

The punishment for racially motivated attacks need to be increased and people should not be released so easily. If someone was released and that person then killed someone whoever made the decision to release him (police) need to be held responsible in addition to the attacker.

My dad was in his parked car and then suddenly someone got in the passenger seat and suddenly punched him. After that he kept a baseball bat in his car. He also got robbed of his watch once when walking and got pushed onto the floor. I was born and brought up in the UK but was often told to go back to where I came from.

I am Asian from France and luckily for me, I was stuck "voluntarily" in Vietnam during COVID-19 time. Thks God that was my best decision ever. I was never harassed compared to other Asian in the west.
