The FORT Show : SXSW '13 - Birdcloud - 'Indianer'

Recently, the FORT hosted "Grounded For Life," a SXSW party curated by Brooklyn artist Wesley Rose, aka Wet Pet of Hector's Pets. We'll show you more from the party later, but here's an appetizer. This is Birdcloud, a two women band from Nashville, TN singing "Indianer." Since the song mentions a totem pole, we obviously had to share it. The opinions expressed in this video do not necessarily reflect the views of the FORT.

They were fun to watch and nice enough to give us written permission to post their performance. Go check out their music!

I'm full Navajo and work with the public. I tend to meet a lot of people through work and my hobbies like photography. It seems that when people learn that they immediately begin trying to tell me how their grandmother was a Cherokee princess, how they're 1/64th Pierce, or how they saw Dances With Wolves.
I honestly don't know why.

I am "native Canadian" and this isn't in the slightest offensive, I find it funny and I totally realize that its making fun of those who say "Oh im native too..." and the stereotypes associated with it. Also me and my cousins all agree, Indian isn't offensive in the slightest.

Love them so much. So irreverent and real but so immature and fun too.

In the 90s Tim McGraw did basically this same song unironically.

I think that this seems like the most logical interpretation, also the most popular.
It seems like it's not making fun of native Americans, but the people who have, like, one native American in their family, and will bring it up at every possible opportunity.

nope, it's definitely making fun of wanna be native americans...all the way to the end with "i'm more indianer than all of y'all, all of y'all, all of

“All y’all” is one of the best things about being southern.

People who are offended should just listen to what they're saying. They say "Pow wow", list off fractions of what tribes they are, talk about rain dancing, and they even end it with "Indianer." It's satire.
They also have a song about dicks and another about a girl leaving a snail trail, so there's that.

TheToasterMon  it's probably because you're more indianer than all of us

Thanks for the reply! Apology wholly accepted. Best of luck with The Fort and awesome job on the Totem Pole!

Lol the crowd looks so offended, not because they think it's racist, but because they probably all have said they have Indian blood. This should be Elizabeth Warren's theme song.

To me it is (vikings are badass). But moreso a birthright. If I had indian roots though, I would be proud of them. Indians are awesome. My dad was an artist when I grew up. So my childhood was spend in a house with giant paintings of indians all over. Maybe that makes me quite biased. Or maybe it just means that I'm not basing my view of indians on the way South Park portrays them:)
