Crafting a Guix Installer with Guile and GTK - System Crafters Live!

In this stream, we'll hack on the early stages of a graphical installation UI for GNU Guix! We will use the built-in modules from the official Guix installer to power a new GTK UI written with Guile Scheme. We'll also try to use the Glade UI builder tool to speed up the prototyping process. Let's see how far we can get!

Your experience in this video reminded me why I've been getting into retro computing. My conclusion from observing how computing has evolved is that _all_ software subsystems (even ones as conceptually trivial as a widget kit or an installer) expand proportionally with available resources, unnecessarily, leading to ever-increasing complexity and ever-decreasing comprehensibility, efficiency, productivity, and, well, _fun_ .

Frankly, that Guix installer looks like a maintenance nightmare: a poorly designed, over-engineered Rube Goldberg contraption requiring a training course for anyone attempting to modify it. Were I the project manager I'd simply trash most of it and start over.

Recently I've been dreaming of an 8-bit CPU, simple such that many can fit on a single die but highly parallelizable, with a parallelism-optimized Scheme in ROM—along with, ooh, I dunno, a "text editor" written in it, of course ;)

GTK 4: because we couldn't get it right the first three times.
