This might paint a picture of Hayden Russel's story. Attached to a tree near Capt Russel's base is a small, rickety watchtower, looks like it's easy to fall off of. Let's say Russel found these men, maybe they were Union or Confederate. He may have used communication of some kind to call back to the Union army to tell them that they were they. They could have even been escaped slaves with intel or who he thought should be saved. He may have been going back to them daily to give them food, something to drink, keep them alive. Maybe he climbed that small tower on the tree everyday to keep watch for whomever he was trying to communicate with, or for enemies.

But one day it was rainy, or windy, or both. And he climbed the tower like he always does, but fell and got a concussion and amnesia. So he forgot about the injured men in the woods. They died, and he ended up where he is now

I'm guessing that the reason you found Rum in that box was probably because that's what was used to reduce some of the pain from whatever wounds those men received or diseases they contracted.
I don't know what other painkillers they actually would've used, opiods perhaps?

As a civil war reenactor looking at the battlefield of Boldger's Glade I can tell what happened during the battle.
