ABOUT THE EPISODE:
Restaurant Closures on the Rise: A Closer Look at the Economic Challenges
Renowned chef and restauranteur Andrew Gruel shed light on the complex issues facing California's restaurant industry in a recent interview. While restaurant closures have increased across the country due to inflation, supply chain problems and other economic factors, Gruel believes policies in California have accelerated the pace of closures.

Gruel notes that minimum wage increases and other regulations intended to help workers have unintended consequences. While large franchise owners may be able to absorb higher costs, independent restaurants and small business owners are hit hardest. As they close, communities lose jobs and tax revenue. Vacant storefronts can also contribute to higher crime rates.

To address these challenges, Gruel suggests a balanced approach. Strengthening law enforcement could help curb crimes that impact local businesses. Regulatory reform could lower barriers for new entrepreneurs, boosting job creation. And tax incentives, not tax increases, may encourage businesses to invest in their workers and communities.

Overall, Gruel's perspective highlights the intertwined economic and social impacts of policy decisions. As leaders seek to support workers, they must also consider small business owners who fuel local economies. With open dialogue and data-driven solutions, it may be possible to achieve both goals.

Small independent restaurants have an advantage as they can pay just $10 hr under the table and not have to deal with "workers comp" and FDIC taxes .

Expenses due to crime and shoplifting have an outsized effect on your bottom line due to margins. If your margins are 20%, that means for every 1 item stolen means your next 4 items sold are just to break even. For every $1 dollar you spend on a new window, you have to Sell $5. The effect of crime on a small business is no joke.

San Francisco is really bad for family owned restaurants. City added mandates, minimum wage increases, medical coverage, landlord fees (should not allow international investors buying up the buildings) no vehicle access on certain streets, no foot traffic in many areas of the city, sooo many empty store fronts. etc. The 3rd party delivery services aren't helping either.

How about a video on how street vendors affect restaurants and affect the economy.

Sit down restaurants are becoming a rare luxury spurge, not a weekly event with the family. Food costs are high and tipping is way out of hand.
