Letterpress printing one of the oldest cuts in our museum

Показать описание
We are often asked, “What is the oldest cut in the print shop exhibit?” The Lewis Winter Collection contains the oldest cuts at our museum, considering Winter was in business from 1888 to 1910. However, Winter purchased that business from someone else.
In the Lewis Winter Collection, there is a box of miscellaneous unmounted electrotypes (they don’t have a wood block backing). In this video, Jared prints a cut made by Charles H. Holmes, who had a photo and wood engraving office at 627 J Street in Sacramento in the 1880s. He was hired to be the State Engraver in 1886 and eventually sold his business two years later to Lewis Winter.
This is one of the oldest cuts in the shop, that we know of, made sometime between 1880 and 1886. Holmes’ name is on the cuff of the coat. We’ve heard of putting the cart before the horse, but what does holding a carriage mean?
