Die junge Musikerin Gretta (Keira Knightley) sucht in New York ihr Glück. Während sie gerade daran arbeitet, ihre Musikkarriere in Gang zu bringen, verlässt sie allerdings ihr langjähriger Freund Dave (Adam Levine) für eine erfolgversprechende Solo-Karriere bei einem großen Plattenlabel. Für Gretta bricht eine Welt zusammen, bis sie schließlich von Dan (Mark Ruffalo), einem in Verruf geratenen Plattenproduzenten, entdeckt wird. Dieser sieht Gretta während eines Konzerts auf einer kleinen Bühne im New Yorker East Village, und ist sofort von ihrem puren Talent überwältigt. Die beiden kommen sich schnell näher, und so entsteht aus dieser glücklichen Begegnung eine Beziehung der gegenseitigen Unterstützung und Bestätigung, die nicht nur das Leben der begabten Musikerin, sondern auch das von Dan grundlegend verändert...
