A sitemap is an important part of on-page SEO.
Essentially, a sitemap is a page on your website that lists the pages of your site and provides a link to each one. It's a great way to make sure Google can crawl all of your content, and it can be useful when it comes to creating structured data for social media.
If you're not familiar with structured data, it's basically the idea that we can take information on our website and use it as an SEO tool. We can add additional metadata, which refers to data about data, in order to give search engines more information about what our content is about, what topics are important on our site, etc. Structured data helps search engines determine things like whether or not they should categorize our page for certain types of searches. An example of this is if you have an article about dogs in the pet section, but you haven't added any structured data indicating that this article is about dogs.
Structured data also helps us create rich snippets, which refer to those fancy little boxes that show up in search results and list out facts about businesses, such as hours of operation or phone number. Structured data can help us create these rich snippets so that Google knows exactly what information belongs in each box.
Going back, it's important to have a sitemap because it helps search engines find and index your website's content more quickly, which means it’ll be easier for your viewers to find you when they do a search.
In addition, having a sitemap can help with off-page SEO, which refers to things that happen outside of your site. For example, if someone shares a link to one of your pages on social media, having an up-to-date sitemap will make sure that link points directly to the correct page and not another older version of it!
Moreover, when it comes to on-page SEO, having a sitemap gives you some control over how Google indexes your website. If you want to make sure that a particular page isn't indexed by Google, you can remove it from the sitemap. On the other hand, if you want to make sure that certain pages are indexed by Google, you can add them to the sitemap.
