Great books, I just started Mad Ship. I'm a sucker for anything with pirates, but as always the characters are all fantastic. You can also really see a lot of Hobb's personal experience with having a husband who spent half the year at sea, in the Vestrit family dynamics.
Also, it's only mentioned in one line I believe, but Brashen is 24 at the start of SoM.

I love the Vestrit family so much. So so much. The family dynamics are incredibly interesting. I have mixed feelings about Althea/Brashen. I think he's 3-5 years older than her. I feel pretty neutral about it, so I don't care either way.

Wintrow is one of my favorite characters. I think he's especially interesting to be so young and have such a strong worldview and sense of identity. SoM was a 4.5 star read for me! And I loved The Mad Ship ever more. I hope you do too. :) I'm on Ship of Destiny right now and it's so good already.

Brashen and Althea are fine by me. I'm in the middle of the mad ship and one thing I ablsoutely despise is Captain Kennit and Vivacia's dynamic. It's hurting my soul watching book 2 unfold lol.
