Koronida a dying village in Naxos - quiet and beautiful

Das Bergdorf Komiaki (oder Koronida) liegt im nördlichen Teil von Naxos und kann entweder über das Dorf Apollonas oder das Dorf Koronos erreicht werden. Sein Name leitet sich von der antiken Siedlung Komi ab und neuere Erwähnungen von Komiaki finden sich in mittelalterlichen Dokumenten aus dem Jahr 1537.
Das Dorf liegt etwa 34 km von der Hauptstadt Chora (Naxos-Stadt) entfernt und ist von natürlicher und kultivierter Grünfläche umgeben. Koronida (Komiaki) ist in amphitheatralischer Weise auf dem Grat des Berges Koronos erbaut und von Obstgärten und Weinreben umgeben, die für seine Grünfläche sorgen. Das Dorf überblickt das Ikarusmeer (benannt nach dem Mythos von Ikarus und Daedalus und ihren Wachsflügeln), obwohl das Dorf selbst von den Küstengebieten von Naxos aus nicht sichtbar ist.
Das Dorf hat etwa 500 Einwohner, die sich hauptsächlich mit Viehzucht, Landwirtschaft und vorübergehendem Tourismus beschäftigen. Besucher können die Ruhe und Stille des milden Klimas im örtlichen Café genießen und die Tavernen servieren lokale Gerichte und den hochgeschätzten Komiaki-Wein. Es gibt auch einen Minimarkt, in dem man seine Vorräte auffüllen kann.
Das Gebiet war in der Antike bewohnt, wie die Existenz eines mykenischen Kuppelgrabes (1600-1100 v. Chr., die helladische Periode oder Bronzezeit) zeigt, und das Leben in der Gegend ging während der fränkischen und osmanischen Besetzung ohne Unterbrechung weiter. Im Zentrum des Dorfes befindet sich eine fränkische Festung, ein Überrest aus der Zeit vor den Osmanen.
Zu den Sehenswürdigkeiten im Zentrum der kleinen Siedlung zählen die postbyzantinische Kirche von Theoskepasti und die nahe gelegenen restaurierten Gebäude der Wassermühle, der Olivenmühle und der traditionellen Weinpresse.
Ein lokaler Brauch ist die Schaukel (griechisch: Kounia), die zu Ostern gefeiert wird. Der Überlieferung nach bauen die Jungen die Schaukeln für die Mädchen auf und rezitieren ihnen improvisierte Gedichte, während sie sie hin und her schaukeln. Außerdem feiert die Pfarrkirche Mariä Geburt am 8. September ein zweitägiges Fest.
Komiaki liegt an der Hauptstraße von Chora über Eggares nach Apollonas. Nahegelegene Dörfer sind Messi und Scado. Parkplätze stehen außerhalb des Dorfes zur Verfügung.
The mountainous village of Komiaki (or Koronida) is at the northern part of Naxos and can be reached either by the village of Apollonas or by the village of Koronos. Its name is derived from the ancient settlement of Komi and more recent mention of Komiaki is found in medieval documents dated c.1537.
The village is located approximately 34 km from the capital Chora (Naxos Town), surrounded with both natural and cultivated greenery. Koronida (Komiaki) is built in amphitheatric fashion on the ridge of Mt. Koronos and is surrounded by orchards and grapevines which account for its greenery. The village overlooks the Sea of Icarus (named from the myth of Icarus and Daedalus and their wax wings), although the village itself is not visible from the coastal areas of Naxos.
There are some 500 inhabitants in the village who are mostly occupied with livestock farming, agriculture and passing tourism. Visitors can enjoy peace and quiet in the mild climate seated at the local café and the taverns serve local dishes and the highly-rated Komiaki wine. There is also a mini market to restock at.
The area was inhabited in ancient times, as indicated by the existence of a Mycenaean domed tomb (1600-1100BC the Helladic period or bronze age), and life in the area continued without interruption during the Frankish and Ottoman occupations. There is a Frankish fort in the center of the village, a remnant predating the Ottomans.
In the center of the small settlement, the sights include the post-Byzantine Church of Theoskepasti and the nearby restored buildings of the watermill, the olive mill and the traditional wine press.
A local custom is that of The Swing (Greek - Kounia) which is held at Easter. Tradition has it that the boys set up the swings for the girls and recite improvised poems to them as they swing them to and fro. Also, the parish church of the Nativity of Virgin Mary celebrates a two-day feast on September 8.
