To be fair, even mixed Maine Coons are going to be sizable compared to other breeds, but your cat’s size can give you some distinct clues about its lineage. We were fortunate to get a Maine Coon male from the SPCA. Locally they sell for around $2500 and the SPCA cost us $200. He looks totally MC but is missing the mane. Still, he weighs in at 16lbs but is smart and such a gentleman. Never demands but politely asks. My wife and I have been together for 50yrs and have had many cats. This one is by far the sweetest and smartest of all of them. He communicates very well what he wants and generates the sweetest trills. He is such a delight and has put a serious dent in the mouse population. He has the full tail and fluffy as well as the long layered long silky coat. He will ask us to brush him and will even choose which of the several brushes he wants us to use. He is family and fits right in.

We thought we had a medium-hair light grey tabby when we adopted him at 10 months old. Vet said he probably had some Maine Coon because of his furry toe tufts. At one year, he fluffed out, gained a ruff, and grew quite large. After noticing his ears were smaller, his eyes almond shaped, and he had no 'puffy jowls', we determined he's a Norwegian Forest Cat mix. Doesn't like water, though he scratches the floor in front of the bowl every time before he drinks water (clearing a spot by the stream?), and jumps up high every chance he gets. Fun getting him down from the top of the wardrobe. Love our silver lion. :)

Stray adopted me 4 years ago. Big but scrawny. Got him to shelter. No ID, no chip & not neutered. Got everything done & vaccines. Charles weighs 17 lbs, sweet as sugar, my Velcro cat. DNA shows 25% Mainecoon, Siberian & others. Love him so much, always with me. Plays, jumps & runs around. Indoors only. When he arrived I had 17 1/2 year old cat. Edward was from shelter, stray. Was 18 1/2 when he passed. Charles had been with me for 10 months when Edward passed. Charles was sent to help me. My Angel, love him so much. Probably 6-61/2 now.

When adopting a kitten, you won't see many of the features mentioned. More important to work with a reputable breeder, who will provide all the necessary information. Some breeders will only sell kittens to homes they are satisfied will provide the environment needed.

My Sadie hates water. That's probably on me. Sometimes she'd get poop stuck in her fur and I’d have to give her
a bath. it was more traumatizingfor her. I probably should have gotten use to water when she was a kitten.

Big difference between "not purebred" and "off standard". There are plenty of examples of purebred animals that are far off the breed standard but still are pedigreed--my registered black smoke Turkish Angora looked totally different from the one who was 3rd best of breed that year but both of them were totally beautiful in their own way.
