It was also picked because of the rivers which passed through it, which made shipping cargo much easier.

The actual reason is that Canada was much smaller in 1867 when Ottawa became the capital. It consisted of what are now Southern Ontario and Southern Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. Ottawa was fairly central, and it was more easily defended from American attack than Toronto, Kingston, Montreal, or Quebec City, which were all ports. You could look it up.

Canadian here. The further north, the worse the cold is. Kinda hard to do anything when it's -40°C.

Kingston was originally the capital, but it was moved to Ottawa to further away.

Denmark's capital city, Copenhagen, is also pretty close to the Swedish border. In fact, much closer than Ottawa is to the US border.

If you want to go further back in time to the early 1900s, Serbia's capital city, Belgrade, was extremely close by to the Austro-Hungarian border!

Kingston was the original capital. During the war they moved it to Ottawa because the river creates a choke point which makes naval attacks impossible. It's proximity to Quebec was also a factor

I am Canadian and I am sorry, but what you are saying is untrue, even though it kinda makes sense in the modern era (even though as a Quebecois also, the fact that Ottawa border us don't really change lot of things about independance, it is not really an argurement). The real reason was when Canada (it was called United Canada between 1841 and 1867) was just Ontario and Quebec, they needed a capital between Montreal and Toronto, the most important cities of both provinces at the time, so ultimately, they chose a small village called Bytown at the time, since it was at the middle of Montreal and Toronto (in reality after verification, it was in the middle of Toronto and Quebec, but Ottawa was also at the center of Toronto, Kingston, Montreal and Quebec, so it was perfect spot) Some rivers were also passing there, so it was also good for the economy. Ultimately, they changed the city's name for Ottawa. You must also think that Ottawa was chosen as the capital way before any independance movement was present in Quebec.

I agree with reason number, One, because when you go up more north of Canada, it starts to break up and it And it turns into mini islands. So pretty much. It’s gonna be almost impossible.

1: Most cities are located near a convenient water source
2: transportation - the St Lawrence river was an extremely important mode of transportation

He says Canadian forces took Washington and burned down the White House. Not realizing, that he said that there was no Canada at the time, there was British-Canada.

Great video. Very informative. Please proofread the grammar. A+ in history and geography, B- in grammar. Choosed to. Say they chose to, or they had chosen. Even saying choose to doesn't work for past tense but it's slightly better

By the way, it was Queen Victoria who chose Bytown, later Ottawa, as the capital.

Im from Ottawa, and the actual reason is the British needed an alternate route for their supply boats, so they had Col.John Bye build the Rideau canal and the lock system between here and Kingston. Kinda like a back door.

Canada was never at war with the U.S. However, Britain was.
