I visited my brother at the Misawa air base and got to watch two of these take off at full afterburner all day every 30 minutes for a whole month. It is one of my favorite memories

I got to tour a Japanese Air Self Defense Force aircraft hangar back in 1982 when I was a second lewy. You could eat off the floors of their hangars they were so clean, and everything was in perfect order.

The Japanese didn't "copy" the F-16. They contacted Lockheed to build it for them with a deal where Mitsubishi could manufacture them.

You also have to factor in their different roles, as well.

The F-16 is a multi-role all weather, all environment fighter. It’s designed with maneuverability and survivability in mind.

The F-2 is an air to air fighter, primarily. The extended range is to maximize defensive area against China.

Went from two nations wanting to destroy each other in WW2 to now becoming extremely close allies sharing a ton of military tech. Japan looks like an awesome place to visit

Biggest difference between the two is the F-2's primary mission (which it's design was modified to achieve) is anti-shipping. The F-16 was superior in dogfighting while the F-2 was superior in long range anti-maritime strikes and SEAD. The F-16 has a superior thrust to weight ratio, roll rate, pitch rate, climb rate, and both instantaneous and sustained turn rates. The F-16 is made of the same composites and alloys as the F-2, and both aircraft engines max at 29.5Klbs of thrust. The F-16 is lighter, which is why it achieves at thrust to weight ratio of 1.1 where the F-2 achieves 0.9. The F-2s also have not received nearly the amount of upgrades as the F-16s have since the 1990s. The USAF newest F-16V upgrade features the same software and integration systems as the new F-35 Block 4 and F-22 upgrades. The F-2 was superior a few decades ago, but this now.
