Travis Fimmel on 'Maggie's Plan', His Favorite Season of 'Vikings', and 'Warcraft' Weapons

One of the many films to show at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was Rebecca Miller’s Maggie’s Plan. The best way to describe the film is to say it’s a modern romantic comedy that doesn’t stick to the archetypal genre tropes. Greta Gerwig plays a young woman that wants to have a baby and after coming up with a plan to have a former classmate (Travis Fimmel) artificially inseminate her; she meets a coworker (Ethan Hawke) that isn’t happy in his marriage to a brilliant Danish academic (Julianne Moore) and they begin to fall for each other. But things aren’t as simple as happily ever after and that’s when the film takes some interesting turns. Maggie’s Plan also stars Bill Hader, Maya Rudolph, Ida Rohatyn, and Wallace Shawn. For more on the film read Matt's review.

Shortly after seeing the film, I sat down with Travis Fimmel for an extended video interview. He talked about being at Sundance, being part of Maggie’s Plan, his experience working with director Duncan Jones on Warcraft, the next two seasons of Vikings and what it’s been like making the show, and so much more. Check out what he had to say below.

Travis Fimmel:

0:35 – Talks about his first visit to Sundance for Maggie’s Plan.
1:00 – Comments on the smart script.
1:20 – Talks about how he got involved.
3:05 – Comments on his Vikings
3:20 – Talks about his upcoming roles, including
4:00 – Admits to being awful at auditions.
5:40 – Reveals the central conflict in
6:20 – Talks about his first time filming motion-capture and blue screen and his reaction to the final rendered footage.
7:05 – Comments on his experience working with director Duncan Jones.
7:45 – Reflects on a tense moment from filming that silenced the cast and crew.
8:50 – Revealed how many people it took to help him with the bigger-than-life armor and swords, and how close everything looked to the game.
10:10 – Fimmel talks about his experience through five seasons of Vikings and praises the crew.
12:25 – Teases the upcoming season, which is his favorite.

this dude sounds always so spontaneous, down to the earth, i don't know...humble, like if he was truly thankful for his career as an actor. the kind of favourite buddy you wanna share a beer and be honest with.

He looks better now than he did in that CK ad years ago. He looked great obviously but the lines he has now make him more interesting. But the hottest thing about him is still how down to earth and chill he is! Damn, what a cool dude!

Such a great, informative interview with Travis, thank you for sharing!! He is the best guy, so cool, down-to-earth, badass, and so very handsome!! *those eyes* Love his personality, and I'm so intrigued by him. Travis has such big potential, I hope after 'Vikings' he will continue to work and make great, interesting, and brave career choices like now. Keep on, Travis!! PS: 'Warcraft' will be awesome with him, this cast, and Duncan Jones directing. I bet on it.

Travis absolutely _killed_ it in Vikings!! Such an amazing transformation and nuanced performance! What a great character... from the sounds of it (3:23), he's done with it though :( Will be really sad to see him go. He's kind of like the Rick Grimes of the show... Hope they keep him for as long as they can.
