Crazy Pink Salt Flats // Episode 8 // Spiral Jetty - Salt Lake City, Utah

In Episode 8 of our Camper Van Road Trip, we visit pink salt flats just outside of Salt Lake City.

On the north side of the Great Salt Lake is the Spiral Jetty, an art installation that was created in the 1970s. It's a long bumpy road to get out to the jetty, but it's well worth it as the water on the coast turns pink at certain times of the year.

This is a great Salt Lake City day trip and one of the craziest landscapes we have ever seen. Definitely worth checking out!

Nice Vlog and drone imagery! It's pretty there at the flats but definitely wash your now softer feet and sandles after that place. Unfortunate fact about part of the smell of that area is the wastewater plants that dump treated water into it. Biggest cause though is the low oxygen content that causes bacteria to decompose quickly, algae (that causes the color), and the tiny brine shrimp (sold as Sea-Monkeys out of comic books!) that dry out and die when the water level goes out. The Brine Flies live on the algae, that's why there's a ton of them out there.
Fun fact that the salt flat and smell reminded me of. In the movie Independence Day when Will Smith is dragging the alien in his parachute, talking to it and then turns and yells "And what the HELL is that SMELL?!" right before he kicks it, he wasn't actually talking about the alien! The line and kicking of it was unscripted. The director didn't tell Will about the brine shrimp and hydrogen sulfide smell in the salt before shooting the scene as a trick because he thought his facial reactions would either be funny or make him look more intense. As he dragged the parachute and alien it dug down through the salt to the deeper layers where it was worse and stirred it up releasing the strong rotton smell, and when he couldn't take any more he stopped and yelled that line out and they left it in the movie because it looked like he was talking about the alien body stench! 💩👽🤮🤣 lol!

The view from above the salt flats is absolutely stunning. Reminds us of those glass art pieces with water and sand that you can flip over to create crazy patterns. Oh yeah, that is MY kind of oatmeal (Bobby is non-plussed with any kind of oatmeal). Crazy story about the town of Thistle. Amazing to see that house still standing (sort of) after all these years. Damn, those campsites in Jackson Hole must have been expensive!! New friends here :)
