I always loved Newman as an actor, especially The Hustler and The Verdict and for that reason I would have been given him a free pass on Israel, given he's an American Jew. But he's gone up ten times higher in my estimation for that performance. It's never easy to criticise Israel - or the US - in America. But to do that in 1983 at the height of Reagan's popularity and amid the late Cold War militaristic jingoism of "Morning in America" showed a lot of balls and moral courage.

Just to add to his point. Ten years later, in 1992, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Yeltsin handed over the debris of the Korean airliner KA007, the cockpit recorders of the airliner and of the Soviet fighter pilot who shot it down, not to mention human and other remains - full transparency. But we still don't know why the Korean pilot - a former Korean air force pilot with strong links to the US military and intelligence veered so wildly off course and failed to correct, turned off his transponders and "went dark" even after he was given repeated warnings by the Soviet pilot. It was technically impossible for him not to know he had strayed into Soviet airspace and for so long.

We also don't know what the CIA spy planes in the area - (Boeing aircraft whose silhouettes closely resembled the 747) were doing and if their flight paths crossed KA007's. At the time, the CIA's chief Bill Casey had launched a whole series of what were called "active measures" to provoke and undermine the Soviets after he took over the agency in 1981. The most infamous of these was the beaching of Soviet subs on the Swedish coast in collaboration with the Swedish military to embarrass Sweden out of its neutrality.


If only Newman had lived to see Gaza, and the complicit denials of Genocide Joe, he'd be sick with outrage.
