Using the "Would my Grandma recognize them?" metric for the overall superheroes, I say Superman, Batman, Spider-Man and The Hulk.

Cap is easily in over Ironman. Before the mcu, Cap was one of the most popular and important marvel characters, on the level of Hulk, Wolverine, and even Spidey.

In terms of just comics, Hulk has had more impact than Ironman and Cap

For DC & Marvel villains I'd pick Doctor Doom over Green Goblin. Considering that Doctor Doom is THAT icon with SIGNIFICANTLY less adaptations, is a testament to how popular and important he really is.

Venom honestly deserves to be on the marvel villain list. I know he’s an anti hero now, but he’s incredibly iconic as a villain and just as a character and general.

You are very correct about Spidey and Wolvie being the most popular Marvel heroes.

My two cents in your Cap vs Tony debate - I was a DC kid growing up in the 70s but I definitely knew who Bruce Banner, Peter Parker, and Steve Rogers were. I'd never heard the name Tony Stark. I thought Iron Man (who I'd seen on Avenger covers) was a robot until Robert Downey Jr brought him to life.

2:30 if anything it would be the Flash as the one to remove and maybe Green Lantern but I think Wonder Woman is firmly in there

I feel like when it comes to the overall Rushmore it's always going to be Batman, Superman and Spider-Man, with the 4th character always being the toss-up. Personally my top choices for 4th place are always Wonder Woman, Iron Man, Wolverine or Captain America.

And don't worry, you nailed it with the Marvel heroes Rushmore. Before the MCU Spider-Man, Wolverine and Hulk were the big three of Marvel, but that's changed since the MCU with Captain America and Iron Man becoming just as big (if not bigger) as Wolverine and Hulk (not Spider-Man though, he's still Marvel's #1). Same with Marvel villains, Thanos, Magneto, Green Goblin and Dr Doom are most definitely Marvel's biggest and most iconic villains.

Replace green goblin with doctor doom and the mount rushmore would be perfect
Like I’m sorry green goblin has some great moments but imo there’s more bad stories of goblin than good ones meanwhile doctor doom is the greatest villain in all comic bc the only way to describe him is *villain*

I would have Superman (THE superhero), Batman (the most popular DC hero), Spider-Man (the most popular Marvel hero), and Wonder Woman (THE female superhero). I think Wonder Woman has also had more cultural impact overall, throughout history, than Captain America, Iron Man or Wolverine. Even today, I think more people worldwide would be able to recognise and name Wonder Woman over the other three if you showed them a picture of her.

If there was a Mount Rushmore of comics, it had to based on marketing. General, it's Superman, Batman, Spiderman, and the Hulk. Spiderman, Hulk, Cap, and Wolverine. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Flash. This is based on toys, TV, and movies since the 50s. Honorable mention is OG Captain Marvel (Shazam).

If it’s about popularity, how is WW not iconic enough to be next to Superman, Batman and Spider-Man? She’s literally the first popular female, comic book character! She remains the most iconic female superhero ever! Yes, she doesn’t sell as well as the other characters but she has been the only female character who still has her ongoing solo series since 1940s. It’s not even about her being female. It’s literally because she is iconic and a big part of comic book history (and not just DC’s)
