Shooting a Firearm is a Life Skill

Welcome to the Ron Spomer Outdoors Podcast!

It’s as important to know how to shoot well as it is to know how to do basic carpentry, electric work, plumbing work, and just life skills. And I know a lot of people think a life skill is not shooting a firearm or a bow or even a slingshot, but throughout human history, I think we have learned that those basic tools that we invented serve a darn good purpose. They keep us alive, and they provide food for us. And of course, in safe times, they’re just plain fun to develop hand-eye coordination skills. If you enjoy hitting badminton or a tennis ball or a golf ball or throwing a football or any other hand-eye coordination sport of throwing things, that’s just what the human animal does. We are a toolmaker, and we have made some wonderful tools that we now call rifles and shotguns. And I think it’s good to learn how to use those and use those properly and safely, of course.

Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion – the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me – from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

Exactly, like knowing how to sharpen a knife. Basic skills are a must.

A skill which should be apart of the skill-set of every man, and woman.

Rather have it and not need it. Than need it and not have it

Those are all basic skills I learned from my grandfather. And it's really weird most everybody I know and work with, think I'm John Wayne because I can do the things that I always thought was just what you learn how to do as a man

If we don't get the younger generation into this it will be lost and we will be screwed.

Around the beginning of our country, boys as young as 10 years of age were training with a full sized rifle. Well regulated in the context of the second amendment means to be well trained and prepared.

It upsets me so damn much people go injure an animal and blame it on the gun. They take shots further without shooting enough ! People learn your gun and it’s capabilities ! Practice a lot !

I agree and disagree with you. In one hand I like shooting fishing and archery in another hand I don't like carpentry or plumbing or electrical works. I think that knowing everything is good but not really necessary. The division of roles is what created society and for self reliance knowing how to build a house is not the first thing to have, building a fire and find water are more pressing. Not to talk about the risk of injury normal profession put you in. Without a hand shooting a rifle is very difficult

19 years old and 100% true right here I've learned all that and I could still learn more learning that you need to shut up more so you can listen instead of talking because when you're talking all you say is what you know and how you learn and what you know is from listening
