This deserves revisiting with everything that’s changed. It’s only now, Dec 2023, that I finally have this working. And I even have HA sharing a thread network & border routers with Apple Home.

Time for an update? Do the ecosystems work together well now over a year later?

I'm having a hard time understanding this video. How was this in any way a "disaster"
The only 2 matter devices that *exist* today paired on the first try and worked flawlessly.
This is one of the better implementations I've seen since launch, they just need to make it easier to find the "pair device" button and make the (already one-click) "enable thread on skyconnect" button easier to find.

Just a little UX improvement and it'll be perfect. A new "Add Matter" button somewhere, and if you try to add a thread device without a border router, prompt you to add one.

Excellent video.
Two or three months ago I bought the Home Assistant SkyConnect (Zigbee/Thread) and about a month ago I bought two Tapo switches with Matter and it has worked perfectly for me.
I only had to connect the plugs and Home Assistant discovered it automatically, but it sent me to configure from the application, which I did and the installation was extremely simple and fast and so far I have not had any type of problem.

So what's the sitch a year later? Planning to put together a smart home with Home Assistant and planning on what hardware/protocol to pick. I am tempted to go with Thread since it seems like a very reliable protocol and standart that is constantly seeing more adoption o.o

Matter is clearly marked as BETA in Home Assistant. I'd say calling it a Disaster is click bait.

Hey Reed, there's been plenty of electrons over the bridge on this issue. Is it fixed? What about Thread? What else is new. At this point, does it really Matter anymore?

I was pondering the SkyConnect but something you left out is it's currently only able to Matter if your on HA OS. I run HA in Docker so it won't work for me :(

It's still in beta..., But they didn't really seem to be a disaster

I'm not an HA guy but I found the information you imparted very interesting. You packed a lot of good and clear direction in this six minute video Reed. There are always comparisons being made between ST and HA as to which is the better system, and although HA has made decisive steps toward being more user friendly platform, this is another example demonstrating that they still have more work to do. Thanks Reed!

Hi I've found your video's very helpful and also quite fun. I was hoping you could help

I've added the Matter integration using the Android app but don't get the option 'commission device with mobile app' as shown in your video. I'm on the latest HA 2023.3. it does as the integration to my integration tab but if I go to Devices > Add Device > add matter device the camera doesn't show up, instead I brought get a pop up that says Matter is currently unavailable.

Is this still working for you or is there some new way I can commission device with my mobile that I've missed?

One year later, how does home assistant work with Thread & matter?

Hey Reed, I'm Loving Your Videos. I have a really strange thing I'm TRYING to implement. Is there any way that you know of getting HA to Be able to use the motion sensor capabilities of a google nest thermostat. All I can see are climate, humidity, and temperature. I'd like to setup an automation when someone walks past the Nest Thermostat it triggers a light strip. Thanks For Your Valuable Time.

Thanks.
Now I see why you didn't include this in the other video.

So I have 3 HomePod minis and an Apple TV with Thread, ands SkyConnect. I’m assuming the best way to add Matter devices would be to add it to HomeKit then share with HA?
