My favourite city in the world

Norilsk is my favourite city in the world, and i thought it would be good to have a slide show of it, fair enough, some people may say it looks like a slum, or even a shit hole, but the industry, dilapidated flats combined with historical and fine architecture of some buildings makes the city have a somewhat eerie feel.

Even though i like the city a lot, i probably wouldnt want to live in it (i know, im hypocritical) but if was, for example, a dictator of a small country, i reckon the capital city would be something like Norilsk

I don't own the pictures of music. Music is done by The Sisters of Mercy and the pictures of from various websites.

This place looks amazing. I'd love to rent a room in one of the communist house blocks. Then head out for a bowl of porridge and gruel at the local dining hall. Maybe I could finish the night alone with a bottle of vodka while slowly freezing to death at the edge of a polluted riverbank.

Norilsk is so polluted that all the trees within a 20 mile radius have died. Winter lasts for 8 months and temperatures can drop to -50°C (-60°F). The short summers are normally cool, the record high being 30°C (86°F), although this normally isn't enough to melt the winter snow. During December and January there is no sunlight, just eternal darkness. Children aren't allowed outdoors for most of the year, so have to play in specially constructed indoor play areas.

Many residents work in the city's enormous mines. Here they are paid a good wage but the working conditions are extreme, so workers are given 90 days of holiday each year and retire at 45. The city is only accessible by air, or the waterways which are frozen solid for most of the year. Anybody wanting to leave may have to wait months, even years, for a flight out of the city.

The combination of high pollution, tough working conditions, low climate and lack of UV exposure in the depths of winter means that most of the city's 175, 365 residents are unhealthy. The city is closed to all non-Russians, except Belarusians.

I like this city too, looks like an amazing place, something different than principal capital and other famous cities. Saldy is too cold for me. I don't think that I can been here one day, but I love it.

You're not hypocritical. There's nothing hypocritical about it. Norilsk is basically fascinating. No, the life conditions aren't too desirable; people probably make lots of money there, but nobody wants it to be this hard. The reason why you like Norilsk is because it's a soulful, manly and extreme place.

Wow, I really envy your ability to look at this place and say “I’d love to go there”. I bet you’d be happy to go anywhere in the world. I could
never, ever bring myself to go to Norilsk; I feel like killing myself whenever I just see pictures of it.

Been in a lot of Artic places both in Europe and North America and I've always found melancholy but also a lot of lively people. Mostly because people get there either in search of new chances or becuase some government deemed them to be too dangerously intelligent. I bet this is no different in Norilsk, I am sure you find more interesting people there than in most places on the planet.

Where did you find this? I couldn't find much. A lot of vague citation that it is "10 years less than in the Russian Federation" (that would mean 59 with big man-woman gap). The only semi-reliable data is in tegh home-page of Strathclyde University and gives a life expectancy for Krasnoyarsk Krai of 56 resp. 70 years for men and women. If it is true this huge gap I would expect there is something more than pollution to the relatively low l.e.

i would love to go there for a week or two and feel the real atmosphere of the city, the real scense of it, looks bloody interesting and quite creepy, that´s what it makes it beautiful, like detroit, or charleroi, or east berlin in the early 90´s ....unforntunately that city it´s closed for foreigners, i don´t know if still is closed, but in the past it was...so i don´t know if it´s to easy to get tehre, without thinking that´s in siberia and it´s in russia and it´s no so easy to get into that country nowadays
