Old WW1 trench lighter Restoration. This old rusty lighter was found by a metal detector on a WW1 battlefield. This is an old trench lighter used by soldiers during the war. The lighter was rusty and broken. I decided to restore this old trench lighter. I removed the rust, polished and replaced the broken parts. I hope you enjoyed my restoration video.

A little tidbit: These are called trench lighters because they’re commonly found in WWI trenches. They’re a French design made common from 1910s onwards and were officially called storm lighters as they were designed to be used in all weather conditions. They normally have a cap on a chain to douse and protect the wick.

Quite a painstaking restoration. Fine!

Was that a seam at the bottom of the main lighter cylinder = to unscrew the bottom or just a line engraved in it for styling, you wouldn’t have had to struggle pulling the string and cotton out of the fill hole if the whole bottom unscrewed?

Likely a stupid question, but is there a cap that goes over the wick end to reduce evaporation or wicking fluid to the pocket? My first thought was a cap for copper tubing. Good work: looked like a goner at first.

Al no tener tapa, el combustible se evaporaría a través de la mecha.
