Firing Pottery for the Archaeology Field School

Every summer (except 2020) I drive out to New Mexico to teach pottery to the archaeology students at the @ArchaeologySouthwest Preservation Archaeology Field School. We form the pots on Memorial Day and fire on the 4th of July. So a few days ago (July 4, 2021) I showed up in Cliff, NM to fire the student's pottery. This video shows the whole firing in time lapse with voice over explaining my actions.

First of all thank you a lot, you are my inspiration guide and much my question....I am never sure what kind of some can I use as kiln furniture....once i tried slate but it cracked, it is not that easy to know what a stone is made of, which ones might explode? ...Is it enough with warming them up during the frist fire like the pots, in this video you kind of say thet they just explode because of the water ....Thanks again from Galicia, Spain

Hi again from Japan. I wonder why you couldn't have just left the pieces to cool 'in situ, ' amongst the ashes. (Unless there was a time-limit issue, as it was the last day...)

I'm surprised that you didn't have to refuel the fire to get to temperature and maintain it

pottery made wet cooking a lot easier.

Luke Baker in Kansas. I recently discovered your channel and I love it. I’m all about aboriginal methods of production, and you’re clearly the one to help me reach my pottery goals. You’re a very good and experienced teacher. Ideally I want to make a pot large and sturdy enough to tan a deer hide (5-10 gallons, perhaps). Would you care to make a video on making large pots? (I’m excited to try using the flexible, credit card like scutes from a snapping turtle shell as scrapers, by the way, along with some freshwater mussel shells). Keep up the good work

How do you (we) know how long to fire the pieces for, and how long to maintain the highest temp? Thanks!
