How to Build a Kyosho Scorpion RC Off Road Racer - Part 1

Hi Folks and welcome to Part 1 of this "how-to" build guide of my first ever Kyosho RC kit! It's the Kyosho Scorpion RC Off Road Racer, 2014 re-release rear-wheel drive (RWD) buggy. In this part, I cover steps 1 to 15 of the build manual which includes the construction of the main aluminium chassis frame, steering and the front and rear suspension components. I also fit the gearbox and an Absima Thrust B-Spec 21 double-turn rebuildable brushed motor.
After years of building and running Tamiya RC kits, I'm really excited to get this Kyosho buggy built up and running.
This fantastic 1/10 RC buggy kit consists of mainly aircraft-quality aluminium components. It promises to be a good running and strong, reliable RC car. I hope you enjoy the Build!
...for sending this awesome kit as a gift. Thank you so much, Barry!

Oh that is such a cool chassis... love it! I think a Kyosho chassis with a Tamiya hard body on it would be my ultimate RC concoction. 😎👍

Hi Mark, looks incredible! Like a Mecanno kit 😎 The quality looks fantastic and I really enjoyed watching you put it together. You seem really impressed by the way it is all coming together. I am eyeing up an Ultima or an Optima for the future. Until then I can enjoy your build 👍🏻🙌🏻

Wow, what a great looking build mate, looks really good quality! Although I'm not that keen on the shock design and the way you fill them, but they looked like they went back together OK. Excellent video as always, can't wait to see part 2👍👍

That's a great kit, I finished my kyosho Tomahawk. I didn't go as elaborate as you but you definitely went into detail well. Thanks for sharing!

They really are a treat to put together! All the precision bits and pieces really go together well.

Looks great Mark! Glad you got a updated version without the diff problem that you used to have to grind some material off the plastic side to fit the bearing on. This things fast with a stock tamiya silver can it's going to fly! Can't wait for you to finish and drive this beauty your going to love it!!

Yeah, Mark, you didn't wait around to get started on this! I'm happy you did, I love watching these before a build, it's almost like having done it before when I do get started, which I'm actually really looking forward to. I'm stuck building a 1/32 scale and I just can't wait to get back on tenth scale, ha ha!
Have a great weekend there!

Awesome build brother Takes me back to when I built my Kyosho Assault. The only thing I didn't like is the friction/press fit rear wheels, that old nitro buggy didn't have reverse but the wheels still came loose unless I really cranked down on the wheel nuts, (no grub screw holding on the wheel hub, it was a tapered fit). All in all she's looking good mate!!! Soon it's body work, waiting to see how/what you did with that. ATB my friend to you &

Hiya matey. Really enjoyable to watch, especially as I've just got to that exact step of the build of my Turbo Scorpion. It was reassuring to see that you had some of the same issues that I came across. I didn't think of filing down the sides of that bar at the front where the metal clamp bits go round. I just mashed them on with a mole grip. They are not quite exactly lined up with the mark on the clamp but hopefully near enough. Also I was concerned that there is a little gap between them and the chassis but you have got the same gap. One thing I did have issues with was the pre assembled diff. It was really rough to turn and I had a right old palaver to sort it out which you will see when my video comes out. I'm going to wait until I've finished the car so I can put a bit of run footage at the start and end like I did with the Volvo Hauler build. Hey we made it to 3 pubs last night which was good. Hope you're having a good weekend so far. The sun keeps peeping out so I'm wondering whether to go out with some RC's or keep building the Scorpion. Anyway great build vid mate. Best wishes to you 😁

Awesome video Mark. I had the same issues on step 5 as you. But after this the build will go straight forward. Looking forward for your next video👍

Mi Mark, and now how do you feel with Kyosho? Less models than Tamiya and perhaps not so nice for the eyes, but quality and tech??? Ciao, Nanni

Hi Mark. I had the same issue with the front bar. I found that when I tightened it down, a little bit on each screw at a time to make sure it was level, it sat in place fine. The ridges are soft enough to allow it to fit in those bridges as long as you follow this process. Well done on getting that bearing in place, bloody tight fit lol 👍🏼

Really enjoyed that Mark.. It’s a lovely thing isn’t it.. Like you I’ve never built a kyosho before.. it’s something I would like to do one day.. I did build a Mardave Apache back in the day but it’s been Tamiya for me

I just knew you would love this top quality beast Mark. Kyosho build great stuff, I've never needed any spares because they are tough little buggies. They build a decent boat to, out of 60 rcs we have the bettle and the ultima are my favorites. These kyosho kits are hard to find and wish they would make more like Tamiya do. They are more expensive but it's more than worth the money. They handle well and look fantastic, I finished building the big Tamiya knight hauler and I'm building a Scania semi now. The trucks are a long but enjoying build. People say they're too expensive but they are cheap for what you get . This will look great especially with the centre line wheels, bet you can't wait to drive this beast of a buggy. Great video mate and love your work.

Hi Mark, really great video, I’m glad you are building this before me, if I ever get one….hint hint RC Elf 🧝‍♀️ lol 😂
I’m a bit like Carmine, i don’t think I will ever get a Kyosho buggy….. but I have 4 Kyosho Ford RS200’s, 1/10 scale nitro on road rally cars, i even got the very first one in the Province, N I, Belfast in the late 80s after reading the reviews of them in the rc magazines, best of all is the carburettor on them, it only has the main needle 🪡 and not the bottom and top end needles, so it’s really easy to get it set up very easily.
Any how, I’m diversing?, awesome build video Mark. Looking forward to seeing the next video. 😎👍👍👍🇬🇧

My shocks ended up leaking.
I changed them over to a set off of a (take off ) Tamiya cc01 shocks... Which fit .. and work.. and haven't leaked yet. .. the rubber rings in the kyosho ones expanded making them useless..

Beautiful build, compared to most tamiya kits the quality is just way higher and they are fun to run as well. Cheers from Germany and enjoy!

Hi Mark, well that was thoroughly engrossing. It looks like it took up every ounce of your RC experience in putting this one together. The quality though from straight out of the box is amazing - is it actually ALL metal or what ? In a way Kyosho have kinda shot themselves in the foot ( in a good way ) in that regarding upgrades and is nowhere to go. Very, very impressive kit. In some ways it reminds me of the Tamiya Sand Scorcher / Rough Rider chassis with all this metal, but probably even more impressive than those. I suppose both do come from the same era. Very much looking to part 2 of this build Mark. Cant wait. Have a great weekend pal...👍🏻🙂😁👍🏻.
