I believe that these two guys are mirroring each other at different stages in a relationship. Guy #1 is clearly conflicted and a bit more self absorbed. In fact, so much of his story is about him that you don’t even realize he’s in a relationship until the end. Guy #2, who at one time was guy #1, has finally reached that “what have I done?” moment while realizing his mistakes. Unfortunately this realization comes after he’s already lost her. Guy #2 probably knows his chances are slim, but to him little chance is better than none because he knows that she’s the one and she belongs.
