How to do a surge analysis of a rising main using the Wanda software tool. The video demonstrates how to build a hydraulic model of a rising main then how to analyse the surge (water hammer) results obtained from a pump trip.
Surge tanks are often used to reduce the maximum surge pressures and reduce pressure fluctuation. The video shows how to use Wander to design an optimise a surge suppression system using a surge vessel.

Good day. Your videos are extremely helpful. Thank you! I have some questions relating to this video.

1) Why does the discharge decrease so sharply before oscillating (16:18) when in a theoretical analysis the velocity would change direction but not magnitude? Why does it not follow a similar pattern to the pressure (16:50)?

2) What is the interpretation of the oscillations around 1 bar pressure in the graphs at 24:37 and 32:49?

3) You address the resulting high pressures by introducing a surge vessel but you have not addressed the resulting negative pressures (not in this video, at least). Would you not consider ways of avoiding low pressures and the associated problem of cavitation in this case?

I stumbled upon your videos while doing research for a micro hydro power system for African homes. We are looking to design a system that uses elevated water tanks to spin turbines. We're also looking to pump the water back by any combination of pumps that leverage air pressure (trompe, hydraulic pump), water hammer and all the kinetic energy of the flowing water. The goal is to maintain 3seconds of flow rate in the overhead tank at all times by the combined functions of these pumps.

We need your expertise designing this system. Kindly let us know how we can engage.
