The Story of HUM

In this week's video, I dive into the story of HUM, an alternative rock/metal band formed in 1989. Largely influential, HUM released iconic records including 1995's "You'd Prefer An Astronaut" and 1998's "Downward is Heavenward". The band is perhaps best known for their 1995 hit, "Stars." Now back in 2020 with Inlet, HUM is going stronger than ever. Watch to gain some insight on the band behind singles such as "Stars," "The Pod," and "Comin' Home."

My buddy was dating Matt's cousin and she found out I was a huge fan. She went to a family reunion and I told her to tell Matt hi and his music is great. When she came back she gave me an autographed LP of YPAA that Matt was gracious enough to give a complete stranger. Love Hum.

Matt Talbott is a music professor at my alma mater! I got to travel to Italy with him as part of our university's study abroad program. He is the coolest, funniest, most brilliant human being you'll ever meet.

I'm glad to see that love for HUM is shining bright. <3

I can't believe Bryan St. Pere is gone. He was a massive influence on my playing early on my life. RIP, Bryan, heartfelt condolences to the family and his bandmates.

Bryan St. Pere used to come into my music store to get his kid drum lessons. We talked a lot while he was waiting for his lessons to end. Really laid back dude. I liked him a lot.

You’d prefer an Astronaut and Downward is Heavenward ruled my teenage years. They were severely underrated

Chino specifically citing HUM as an influence is what made me check them out and I'm super glad I did.

Inlet is fucking brilliantly heavy and melodic. Always loved the heavy punch of stars but never really listened to anything else from Hum. Then I saw inlet while searching for some new music and can’t put it down. A lot of people comment the the songs are too long, but they’re so good I never really notice. It is SO incredibly rare for a band to write something so amazing so long into they’re career. One of my favorite albums period.

Inlet is by far their best and ahead of its time... just like they were in '95. Give it time.

Downward is Heavenward has some of the best tones ever produced. It’s just a wall of sound, a massive tidal wave that completely submerges you.

The new HUM album "Inlet", believe it or not, is amazing and probably their best overall album ever. This guy is crazy, it literally is a perfect HUM album.

Inlet, by far best post-metal/prog/space rock album in years. Perfectly balanced in darkness and melodic form. Truly amazing and contemporary sounding, for the amount of time between albums. Highly recommended for listeners who are looking for something a little challenging. It gets better every listen.

"I'd like your hair long" is one of the greatest songs ever of any band... So many different aspects to it that are wonderful... dynamics... arpeggios... heavy guitars... and lighter guitars (they weren't really clean, but not overloaded with distortion... not sure what to call it).. and the drum parts were amazing... I've loved this song since I first heard it. Thanks for putting together this history vid!

One of the best bands to ever make music.

I truly believe if they would have put out "Green To Me" as the first single it would have blown up a lot like "Stars"

Their recent album 'Inlet' is one of the best rock albums I've heard from the last few years, it's wonderful.

I remember as a teen hearing Stars on the radio and it blew my mind. I had You’d Prefer an Astronaut on cassette tape and wore it out in the car. And although Downward is Heavenward didn’t pull me in when it released, over time it really started pulling me more and more and is my favorite HUM album. Inlet is growing on me too though.
