All over India you find such wonderful artisans producing (creating)a million different products. In 1970, near Taj Mahal, I met an artisan working on an ivory lamp from a single tusk (ivory is now banned), with thousands of perfectly symmetrical delicate floral designs. I asked him how long it took him to create the one of a kind piece. He said he worked on it from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every single day for eleven months. He was paid 5000 more than what he asked for it (he was very happy), out of deep respect and admiration. He taught me more than many many books. To this day he has remained an inspiration to me never to do less than my best in any endeavour. The work is destined for a museum, for sure. Every country I visit all over the world, I pay a personal tribute to the artisans and artists of that country. A salute to all the artisans of the world!
