Project Ara, a smartphone you can customize, may seem like a crazy idea, but it's not half as crazy as what it takes to build it. Google's ATAP group, led by Paul Eremenko, takes the DARPA philosophy and applies it to building phones. Eremenko wants five billion customers, but before he gets there, he has to convince developers to create the hardware.
Did you know Google had a secret project that could have changed the smartphone industry forever? Introducing Project ARA, Google’s ambitious plan to create a fully modular smartphone that lets you swap out parts like a PC! From upgrading your camera to changing the battery or even customizing the display, Project ARA aimed to give users full control over their devices.

Rafa Camargo, a software engineer at Google ATAP (Advanced Technology and Projects group), presented a prototype of modular Ara phone during ATAP keynote at Google I/O on May 29, 2015.

Modular smartphone concepts, like Google Project Ara, were all the rage a few years ago. However, Google shut the project down after 2 years, and so did many other companies who were experimenting with these designs. But why?
I believe the answer is manufacturing complexity and lack of demand.
